00:00 Hey, Tuffer Beauties, it's Mary here and I am live from Sally's First Burger Salon in
00:08 West Hollywood with the Mark Townsend celebrity stylist and dove and he is going to help me
00:16 figure out my hair.
00:17 I've got this love, as many of you do, it's a great length.
00:18 It's a great haircut.
00:19 It's a great cut, but kind of a pain to style sometimes.
00:20 So Mark's going to help me learn to style my hair and so you can learn to style yours
00:29 too and he's a great look tip so be sure to shout out your questions when you have them.
00:33 Hit me with any questions you've got.
00:34 I want to start with, like I said, the lob is not just a haircut of the season.
00:35 This is a haircut that has stuck around for many years and it's because it really is incredibly
00:36 versatile.
00:37 You've got enough length to pull it up, but so many women get the lob haircut and then
00:38 don't know what to do with it.
00:39 You can go crazy and style it so many different ways, just however your personality and what
00:40 you feel like doing for the day.
00:41 And also, women are very open to styling.
00:42 So if you're a woman, you can go crazy and style it in so many different ways.

25:33 I'm a little bit of a swimmer.
25:34 I'm a little bit of a swimmer.
25:35 I'm a little bit of a swimmer.
25:36 I'm a little bit of a swimmer.
25:37 I'm a little bit of a swimmer.
25:58 So we can see that one elastic.
25:59 We want to hide that little secret.
26:01 Again, that's where your French hairpins really come into play.
26:05 Take a little bit of this loop from the braid above and pull it right over the elastic.
26:13 And then no one will know how you were able to achieve it.
26:17 [laughter]
26:23 Let's take these down.
26:25 Now, I, as a hairdresser, maybe just enjoyed red carpets for so many years, I don't like
26:37 that you can't see any detail on the sides.
26:39 So I like to add a little bit of something to the sides.
26:42 So when you look in the mirror, you feel like you really have a hairstyle or a hairdo.
26:47 So I like to add a braid on the side.
26:50 Well, so often people are being photographed, like their profile, like literally 360s.
26:56 So you have to think about every angle.
26:58 Exactly.
26:59 Now again, I go through a lot of elastics, but it's all about the control.
27:03 And especially when you're doing it on yourself.
27:06 If you did a braid and you're trying to pin it in, the braid might come too loose by the
27:10 time you find out where you want to place it.
27:12 So these elastics are really good.
27:14 Your elastics are amazing to have on hand.
27:16 There's so much you can do with them.
27:18 Always pull your braid apart a little bit to give it a little more width and texture.
27:25 And again, remember how I said about hiding your sins?
27:44 I'm going to take this little loose bit and do the same thing and tuck it under on this side.
27:48 So again, use your pin here.
27:55 All right, now let's do the same thing to this side.
28:01 Or actually, let's do two.
28:03 This is where you really get to have fun now that the work is done in the back, so now
28:11 you get to have fun with personalizing it.
28:14 I hope you have plans tonight.
28:35 I'm going to have to make some.
28:37 [LAUGHTER]
28:38 All right, once again.
28:47 Put some hair down.
28:54 Right now.
28:57 Like if you didn't want to have a perm, you could just sit back.
29:04 Oh, yes.
29:07 Setting aside those sections in the beginning, it seems like it's giving you room to play now.
29:12 Well, so many times when I'm getting women ready, we're not in front of a mirror.
29:17 I get women ready in a hotel room.
29:21 Most of the time, we're up against the window to get as much natural light for the male
29:25 artists as possible.
29:26 So I get to-- again, I do my work in the back and then with the front, even sometimes after
29:33 their makeup is done, then I take my client over to a mirror and we can really play around
29:39 with if she wants a part, if she wants a straight back, how much volume, how much lift you want
29:44 around the front.
29:45 Last night I was working with Gow Katana for the MTV Awards, and we were doing-- it was
29:51 actually a half-up hairstyle, but it-- you know, when you could figure out how the sides
29:55 were held back so tight, and I could figure out how to do that with all the hair on top,
30:01 all over it.
30:02 So you couldn't see where the hair pins were or how it all started.
30:07 But I was really glad we waited to do the front pins because then I could ask her, "How
30:12 much volume do you want?
30:13 Do you want it to be very tight and slicked back?"
30:16 One more.
30:22 Let's see.
30:23 Because it's so romantic in the front, leaving a few loose bits in the back just kind of
30:38 adds to it.
30:39 I can see one elastic I gotta cover.
30:42 I'm gonna trade sides with you.
30:44 See that one?
30:48 So pull the hair from above, or...
30:52 Voila!
31:01 Really have fun.
31:06 These are hair pins I get from Weed Clark.
31:13 I don't know if you can see them.
31:15 I'm not plaiting things out too much.
31:31 This way.
31:35 This way.
31:36 Again, just to clean things up.
31:48 My toothbrush in my pocket as always.
31:52 A little holster for that.
31:55 I go through these like crazy.
31:58 I love a bit of flyaway hair, a little bit, because that is part of the romance.
32:02 But this...
32:03 My rule is everything in front of the ears usually needs to be blended in with everything else.
32:11 That's a good rule of thumb.
32:13 That's not part of our romance.
32:27 I'm sorry.
32:28 What do we think? How does it look on camera?
32:34 Beautiful.
32:35 Should we turn the lights so we can see a little more?
32:38 Yes, there we go.
32:42 I can't believe your hair looks beautiful.
32:44 I know, I always wear it.
32:45 You have a perfect oval face shape.
32:47 Oh, thank you.
32:48 I'm gonna have to try this on my own.
32:52 Do we have time for another one?
32:54 What do you think, we have time for one more?
32:56 Yes.
32:57 One more?
32:58 You're all taking like five minutes.
33:00 I'm very speedy. I love this.
33:02 Did you even get to see it?
33:04 I'm gonna look back at the video.
33:07 I'm gonna take a picture.
33:10 Yeah, you should take a picture.
33:22 I know we've had some really gross weather in LA recently.
33:26 This is like a great little rainy day.
33:28 A rainy day out too.
33:31 Yeah, I know.
33:32 It's all about the sections.
33:34 It should be great for a humid day too when you're trying to like...
33:39 when you can't wear a down braids.
33:41 Braids are such a quick and easy way to...
33:45 even if you're just growing your hair into a ponytail,
33:49 taking those front sections that you need to have before you do the ponytail,
33:53 do a little braid, and then you can use that hair to wrap around.
33:56 If you've got the length, you can wrap that hair around the base of the braid
33:59 to cover up your elastic.
34:01 What should we do next?
34:08 Do you have any questions?
34:11 Do you have like a quick way to dress up a ponytail for the summer
34:14 when you're just kind of like trying to get out?
34:17 Yeah.
34:18 Let's do a dressed up ponytail.
34:21 Especially on a lot.
34:23 I know people are creative.
34:25 They don't understand the versatility that a lot really does give me.
34:29 Because sometimes ponytails...
34:33 I don't know.
34:35 I mean, I was at this length and just ended up wearing it down a lot.
34:38 But now I'm going to be brave.
34:43 Go for it.
34:44 You just need that braid on.
34:47 You're going to need some braids.
34:49 I thought it was a bunch of different loops.
34:53 It's beautiful.
34:55 I know.
34:56 I thought it was a fun event.
35:01 It's a little fun out there, yeah.
35:03 Same rule applies.
35:07 The front two inches of the hair you need to have.
35:10 Don't try to pull that into the ponytail.
35:12 You'll just drive yourself absolutely crazy.
35:15 That is when I'm going wrong.
35:17 A little twist just to hold it all in.
35:30 [music]
35:32 Take a flat brush.
35:58 And load it with your hairspray.
36:01 Is this for hold or...?
36:08 Hold and control, really.
36:10 Does any flat brush work, or do you need a different kind of bristle?
36:17 I love a mix of a natural bristle and a plastic bristle.
36:21 It gives you the best control.
36:27 Once you find out where you're going to place it...
36:30 You know what's really funny?
36:31 When you're watching a runway show or even a red carpet,
36:37 ponytail is one of the hardest styles to make it look really, really, really red carpet ready.
36:45 I did a ponytail for Dakota Johnson for her first time presenting at the Oscars.
36:52 We tried about two or three different versions of the ponytail before we decided on which one to do.
36:59 We have thick hair, and the first thing to know is that one elastic is never enough.
37:06 Always two, maybe even three.
37:10 Because by the time you've even stretched to get that third loop around the ponytail,
37:15 you've stretched some of the elastic out.
37:17 Oh, man.
37:19 And that's how you probably get a droopy ponytail.
37:24 That's how you get a droopy, sad ponytail.
37:26 Right, once you've got this in place...
37:29 Now that's the simple part, right?
37:31 Ponytail's a ponytail.
37:33 Now, take your side pieces.
37:37 We could have left the braid in almost.
37:45 Yeah, that would have been way better.
37:47 Let's give you that one.
37:49 Instant way to dress up any look.
37:58 It's all in the details, literally.
38:00 Because of the trend that we're seeing of effortless hair,
38:03 it really is like the difference between leaving the gym and going to a red carpet.
38:10 It's all these little details.
38:12 I'm going to leave that one and do the other side.
38:15 See, now I'm only pick-painting with a little bit to make sure everything lays perfectly.
38:28 Everything in the back is done for me already.
38:31 It's especially handy for when you're doing your own hair, I bet,
38:36 because you only have two hands and it can be hard to...
38:41 I actually even get people on Instagram sometimes mad at me
38:46 because they think, "How can a woman ever do this on themselves?"
38:50 Well, take what I do as inspiration and run with it.
38:54 You can never...
38:55 So many of the tutorials that are going on right now,
38:59 no two people ever have the same hair.
39:01 So you can't do the exact same steps on any two people.
39:07 Even with Ashley and Mary Kay, they're twins and they have very different hair.
39:10 That's interesting.
39:11 And I approach it very differently.
39:12 Now, before I lock these in, I'm going to do my little detail and clean up.
39:16 Do you have mascara on?
39:18 Mascara on?
39:20 I lost my toothbrush, so now...
39:22 Trust me.
39:26 They just get lost in my pockets, which I can feel it.
39:29 Extra-old hairspray.
39:33 Go ahead and get these up.
39:40 Now...
39:41 All right.
39:45 I'm going to do the mascara after.
39:48 I'm going to do the mascara after.
39:50 This becomes your...
40:15 There's a bobby pin underneath that goes through the elastic.
40:19 I'll do another one on the other side, too.
40:22 I'm not going to stress about anything else,
40:25 because this one's going to go on top.
40:28 I wonder which one to do.
40:31 [Pin falls off]
40:33 Pin from underneath, going through the ponytail and the elastic.
40:48 To secure...
40:50 Now...
40:52 Hairspray on my finger...
40:55 To lay these down.
40:57 Oh!
40:58 That's a good tip.
41:01 Then you use these little...
41:07 French hairpins are the greatest.
41:09 I need one more bobby pin.
41:19 I need one more bobby pin.
41:20 Sorry, I'm covering everything with my fingers.
41:33 It's okay.
41:35 See the finished result.
41:37 Oh, I've got a pin showing.
41:46 [Pin falls off]
41:47 And then...
41:51 To grab a mascara wand.
41:53 This is the greatest tool ever.
41:54 I'm going to use this flat side...
41:57 To lay down these little hairs.
42:00 Like a really strong old gel is good for these, too.
42:15 [Pin falls off]
42:16 This is when I really wish I stopped biting my nails.
42:22 Oh, yeah?
42:23 Just to smooth your nails?
42:25 I don't want to stop biting my nails.
42:28 And then...
42:30 This side of the mascara wand...
42:32 It's a little purple.
42:34 This is when you want a little more grip in the hair.
42:36 So now this can grab these.
42:39 Oh, yeah.
42:41 [Pin falls off]
42:42 And then you fold them right into your braid.
42:50 We have a flat pin.
42:55 Uh, here.
42:58 I've got one right here.
42:59 Totally hidden.
43:11 So I'm going to put my little secrets in here.
43:13 Beautiful, Mary.
43:25 Look at it. It's so simple.
43:27 This is inevitable to get one or two that pop, like to pop off.
43:49 And this is where our little French hair pins come in real handy.
43:54 Which should we do next?
44:03 Feeling on a roll?
44:05 I can do hair all day, every day.
44:08 I have the perfect job.
44:10 If you have a tendency to get these little loose bits,
44:13 a bobby pin comes in handy.
44:17 You cross them in the back.
44:19 Watch.
44:21 Look down just a little bit.
44:23 Let's trade sides.
44:25 And then the second goes opposite.
44:35 Like an X.
44:38 Like when you see ponytails on the red carpet,
44:46 that's how this always stays so tight from getting droopy.
44:50 But that's a little braid on each side.
44:54 Just dresses up a ponytail into a whole new look.
44:58 It doesn't feel like severe at all.
45:00 It's just like very put together and tricky.
45:04 This is also a good way to twist into a Chanel material.
45:10 I'll have my cover up here with a cute little ponytail.
45:15 How's it look?
45:16 I love it. It's so cute.
45:18 Super cute.
45:19 Oh my gosh, this is fantastic.
45:22 Hit me with some questions.
45:23 Yeah, anyone have other questions?
45:25 Not this time.
45:26 I feel like we've been covering up all the bases.
45:29 Should we do any more?
45:31 Probably.
45:33 Probably great.
45:35 Yeah, I think we're good for now.
45:37 Yeah.
45:38 Do you want to keep your ponytail or do you want to switch to another one?
45:41 Let's go down for the way out.
45:42 Okay.
45:44 Thank you guys.
45:45 Yeah, thanks guys for tuning in.
45:47 Do we need to show them going down or?
45:52 Why not?
45:54 Alright.
45:55 I'm going to take it down.
45:56 It should be style number five.
45:57 Here's your cute little side braids now.
46:06 Yeah, I look like I could be long stocking.
46:08 I could be short stocking.
46:10 [Laughter]
46:12 Maybe for Halloween.
46:14 Right? You're a little early for Halloween.
46:17 Yeah.
46:18 I'd say I have the person who did Wonder Woman's hair.
46:27 [Laughter]
46:29 We're going to China this week.
46:38 Do you have like a whole, you probably have multiple suitcases you're bringing with you.
46:42 Trucks.
46:44 I never know what's going to pop up.
46:47 I bring everything with me just in case.
46:50 Leaf blowers, tons of batteries for those in case we have a long wing.
46:56 Really?
46:58 Last week I was doing a photo shoot in Times Square, in the middle of Times Square.
47:04 And there was this big, beautiful garden built there.
47:07 So it was the juxtaposition of the chaos of Times Square with the serenity of a garden.
47:12 And it was amazing.
47:14 And we wanted just a little breeze running through her hair.
47:17 And true to form, the power wasn't working for the big machine.
47:22 So I had a portable leaf blower that runs on batteries so I could give her a breeze.
47:28 That is what I'm sure years of experience has taught you, just to be ready for everything.
47:33 I'm ready for everything, what I do.
47:35 You'll never know what a photographer, an editor, a stylist, or the client is going to ask for.
47:42 Extensions, products, everything has to travel with me at all times.
47:52 Do you have to bring multiple colors of extensions or do you kind of know what you're working with by the time you bring everything?
47:58 You have to bring everything. It needs to be hot.
48:01 Oh, sorry.
48:03 Let's get it.
48:05 Is that the only part of your hair that's on?
48:12 There we go.
48:14 I know we usually get a lot of questions about curls.
48:17 Do you have any tips for making a curl last?
48:20 Again, dry shampoo is even better than hairspray.
48:25 I really coat, we sprayed a lot of dry shampoo in the hair before we started.
48:29 So that is going to give us a good grip and keep it touchable without it crisping.
48:34 And then, if you don't have a double barrel iron, like your 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch curling iron,
48:42 what you can do to get those little bends, take your section and give it one good bend here.
48:50 Now drop it and give it a bend this way.
48:54 And then one more time in the end.
48:58 And you'll get more of that kind of a boom hair.
49:03 Or, wrap it around.
49:08 I'm going to show you three different curl types.
49:12 I didn't notice you're not clamping.
49:15 No, but now I'm going to.
49:17 Let's do it on the front then so you can see.
49:24 So if you do use the clamp, give it a good little swirl but keep your ends way out.
49:31 It's so pretty.
49:34 Because you want this movement up here but you don't want the curl to continue at the bottom.
49:38 Does that make sense?
49:40 Yeah, I feel like that's a mistake that I know I've made.
49:43 You can go all the way to the bottom and get those dance recital curls sometimes.
49:47 Yeah, very dance moms.
49:49 Who cut your hair? It's amazing.
49:56 Who cut my hair? I know the answer to this.
50:00 Oh, I think I'm the boss.
50:02 I'll tell you off camera.
50:04 Alright, alright. It looks great.
50:06 Thank you.
50:07 Your color too.
50:09 Thanks. Yeah, the color was, um, I was really blanking on everything.
50:17 Yeah, I'll tell you off camera.
50:19 This is, like, now you're saying how we do hair on photo shoots.
50:23 We have to have the hair do three or four different looks in one day.
50:28 Yeah.
50:30 You can never do that. That's where my products are so important.
50:33 I have to try them out so many times when I'm in the salon before I do it on a photo shoot
50:39 because if it flakes, if it doesn't hold as well as it's supposed to, if it's too crunchy.
50:46 Yeah, because I imagine you kind of have to style a little bit on the fly to just know how everything is going to work.
50:52 We have to do full changes sometimes, like on set, in the lights.
50:56 How long have you been doing this?
50:59 I was styling first for this assistant in '98, '99, 2000.
51:06 Wow.
51:08 That's 20 years.
51:10 It's hard to believe. So you started when you were, like, five years old.
51:14 Oh, yeah. No, I was born doing hair. That actually is true.
51:18 I've been doing hair since birth.
51:21 I used to steal my sister's Barbies and give them hair products.
51:25 Oh, did she hate you for that?
51:27 Yeah.
51:29 I always wanted Barbie to have, like, more of a curl in her hair,
51:32 so I would take my mom's curling irons and try to give Barbie a little wave.
51:37 That would melt the hair?
51:39 And then trying to cover up the smell and the burned-off plastic hair was never fun.
51:46 Yeah.
51:48 Well, it seems like you definitely had a destiny early on.
51:52 I mean, I really, really, really knew what I was going to do.
51:56 Yeah, and you, you know, stole her Barbie.
51:58 I'm sure now your sister loves you for it, because you probably do her hair and--
52:02 Now she's like, "Cut my hair. Cut my hair. I'm going to have to make up for all my Barbies."
52:08 Don't worry, I did your guy's shampoo.
52:11 Yeah.
52:13 So pretty.
52:15 It's more than that, right?
52:17 Yeah.
52:19 Make it look forever.
52:21 Hair should be fine.
52:26 You'll never get too, too worked up about it.
52:29 It's fine.
52:31 What do you think?
52:33 I'm obsessed.
52:35 I'm going to have to make plans today.
52:38 Let's go. Let's go to lunch.
52:41 Okay.
52:42 Well, thank you guys for tuning in, and thank you, Mark, for--
52:45 Thank you. This was fun.
52:47 Yeah. If you have any other questions, put them in the comments. We'll try to answer them.
52:50 And for Mark, I'm Mary, and we'll see you next time. Bye.
52:53 Bye.
