00:00 Hi everyone, my name is Amanda Fader, I'm a platform artist with Sexy Hair.
00:05 We're here today on behalf of Salon Centric.
00:07 I want to give a big thank you to Salon Centric for having us.
00:10 Today what we're going to be talking about is curly hair.
00:13 I personally have naturally curly hair, our model here, Cherish, she has naturally curly
00:17 hair as well.
00:18 And naturally curly hair tends to be one of those hair types that has a lot of difficulties
00:23 with it.
00:24 So recently, Sexy Hair, we've revamped our curly sexy hair line.
00:27 We've added kakaya oil and sea algae to help add moisture and nutrients into the hair.
00:32 It's an extremely luxurious line.
00:34 So today what we're going to be talking about is we're going to be going through some curly
00:37 hair cutting techniques, some curly hair ideas, different advice and different ideas on how
00:45 to tackle different issues with curly hair.
00:47 Also we're going to talk about some product application advice, and then also of course
00:51 styling tips and tricks when it comes to curly hair.
00:54 We've got a contest going on today too, so if you guys are watching I want to make sure
00:58 that you guys are active and engaged.
01:00 So I'll be talking about my personal curly hair cutting tips, so in the comments section
01:06 leave your tips for us on your curly hair cutting tip.
01:10 And that's going to be your entry into our contest.
01:13 Which what we're going to be giving away is the full representation of our curly sexy
01:17 hair line.
01:18 So it's just relaunched like I said, and it's in a phenomenal line.
01:22 You guys are going to get, you're going to want to get entered to win that.
01:25 And again how you do that is leaving in the comments section, leaving a tip or trick on
01:29 how to cut curly hair.
01:31 So today again what I'm going to be talking about is some of these problems that we encounter
01:36 whenever we're cutting curly hair.
01:38 One of the main things that I encounter, or the number one I guess issue that comes up
01:45 is the hair creating like this triangle, the dreaded natural curly triangle where there's
01:52 no volume through the top and lots of volume out through the side.
01:56 So whenever we're working with our curly hair client, the number one thing we want to do,
01:59 the very first thing we want to do is we want to see their natural curl pattern.
02:03 So what I like to do, when Cherie came in here today this morning, she was wearing her
02:08 natural curl, she wasn't up in a ponytail, she didn't just come from the gym, I asked
02:13 her to come in with her natural curl pattern so that I could assess the way the hair is
02:16 growing, where I could see is the hair growing away from her face, towards her face, is it
02:21 the same on both sides, I can assess the density through the back of the hair.
02:27 There's really lots of different things that you're figuring out with the hair as we're
02:31 assessing that curl pattern.
02:34 Consultation with our curly haircut can be just as important as a consultation with a
02:38 color client.
02:39 So again it's very important to assess that curl pattern, talk to our client about what
02:44 they're doing each day when it comes to styling and really get that thorough consultation.
02:48 From there, what I like to do is, traditionally what I find, and this was the case with Cherie's
02:53 hair is that she had a lot of density through this back lower portion.
02:59 And a lot of times the way we get this triangle is that that's where a lot of the density
03:03 and the fullness is within the haircut.
03:06 So what we're going to be doing with her haircut today, I went through and did about 90% of
03:10 this haircut, so majority of it's done so we're not actually seeing that dreaded triangle
03:15 in her head shape, but prior to this we were seeing some of that.
03:19 So I'm going to show you guys a quick little idea, whenever you're establishing your perimeter
03:24 in the haircut, what I like to do, rather than cutting just a traditional straight line
03:31 across, I like to take my section that's going to establish my perimeter, and I'm going to
03:40 be taking, what I did through these sections is I took vertical sections.
03:44 And whenever we're taking vertical sections as opposed to horizontal sections, we're going
03:50 to get a lot more density removed.
03:54 Whenever we're cutting with horizontal sections, we're going to get a buildup of weight, so
03:58 that's typically what we see when we cut a traditional perimeter, we have a horizontal
04:04 parting and we cut the hair straight across, across the back, and that creates a very established
04:10 weight line.
04:11 But what we find with curls is that that weight line is what helps contribute to that triangle
04:16 that we've been trying to avoid.
04:18 So you also want to make sure that the hair is extremely wet as you're cutting your curly
04:23 hair client, and also make sure that the hair is staying wet, the same amount of wetness
04:28 the entire haircut.
04:30 Because as we know, curls will shrink up, we'll see some pieces get shorter when they
04:34 shrink, and then if some hair is longer or wetter while we cut, it could potentially
04:38 be longer.
04:39 So making sure we have that consistency in the wetness is very important also.
04:43 So rather than taking this section, pulling it straight down and establishing a perimeter
04:48 traditionally, what I'm going to be doing is take horizontal, or excuse me, vertical
04:53 sections and I'm going to be using a down and out movement.
04:59 The section has already been cut, so you can see what it creates is this shorter to longer
05:05 feel but I'm going to go ahead and just go right through this section again so everyone
05:09 can see how I cut this.
05:11 I'm utilizing structure and motion, which is Sexy Hair's signature cutting system.
05:15 I'm cutting in between my fingers in the head shape, so this allows me to move through angles.
05:20 The tension that's applied to the hair allows me, as I'm cutting, I'm incising and cutting
05:26 down to remove density while establishing a nice, fine perimeter.
05:32 This perimeter that we have down here now is nice and wispy, it's going to move, it's
05:37 going to have some flexibility with how it lays.
05:41 It's really got a lot of lightness and a lot of bounce to it.
05:44 So that's what I did through this entire perimeter and you can see how it establishes just a
05:49 very airy perimeter.
05:52 Rather than having that really heavy shelf, now we've got something, the curls have space
05:56 to move around, they've got lots of area to move and then now we can start building the
06:00 haircut from there.
06:02 Can you position her against the wall so you're shooting against the wall, we can't see the
06:07 section with the retail behind you.
06:12 Gotcha.
06:13 Thank you.
06:16 So again, as you can see here, so we'll turn you a little bit so everyone can see that's
06:26 logged in, is that these vertical sections were cut down and out to create this nice,
06:32 airy, wispy perimeter instead of this really dense, thick shelf.
06:39 So again, as I'm working with my curly haired clients, what I like to do is, I'm always
06:45 thinking about as I'm working through their hair, that's where I'm as a stylist starting
06:49 to figure out and assess how the curls reacting, is some frizz starting to develop, if a lot
06:56 of frizz is starting to develop, I'm starting to think maybe a product like our Ultra Curl
07:03 can help with their hair because it's going to have very strong control.
07:07 This is a point where I really like to, in the middle of the haircut, see how those curls
07:11 are responding and that's going to be a place where I start to figure out my product prescription
07:17 as well.
07:18 Amanda, we have a question from Monica.
07:21 Awesome.
07:22 Hi Monica.
07:23 Hey, what tips do you send your curly haired clients away with?
07:33 Awesome.
07:34 So one of the, that's a great question actually, because the best tip that I give my curly
07:39 haired clients is product and to use that product.
07:42 What I find, sadly, that a lot of our clients, they're not necessarily going home with product
07:49 and even if they are going home with that product, sometimes they're not really using
07:52 it correctly.
07:53 So I think the best tip when it comes to our, talking with our curly haired clients and
07:57 what to send them home with, is sending them home with the right product.
08:01 So Sexy Hair, we've just relaunched again, like I told you guys in the beginning, we
08:05 relaunched our Curly Sexy line.
08:07 We've got four different stylers within the system.
08:10 We've got these really great kits that we've launched that have a styler, a full size styler
08:15 and a travel size shampoo, conditioner and curling cream.
08:19 We've got Curl Power, which is designed to give volume and lift as a mousse.
08:24 We've also got Curl Control, which is going to be a curl gel.
08:28 This is going to give you medium control.
08:31 We've got, I've grazed right over Curling Cream, which is a light control.
08:35 Curling Cream's been around for a little while, you may have tried it in the past and liked
08:39 it.
08:40 We've added Kakai Oil and Sea Algae to add extra nutrients and moisture to the hair,
08:44 so you're going to love it even more now.
08:46 And then we also have Ultra Curl.
08:49 Ultra Curl's quickly becoming my favorite because of its ability to give strong frizz
08:53 control without any crunch.
08:55 And that seems to be the number one benefit that I get from my clients and the feedback
09:00 that I get, is that they don't like the crunch, but they love the control.
09:03 So Ultra Curl's providing that for us, definitely.
09:07 So these kits, like I said, with the full-size product and a travel-size shampoo, conditioner
09:12 and a curling cream are running at $13.48.
09:15 Those can be purchased at Salon Centric.
09:17 And we also have a travel-size kit, a try-me kit with the shampoo, conditioner and the
09:21 curling cream for $7.25 at Salon Centric.
09:27 So this next little tip, another thing that I find a common complaint from my curly-haired
09:32 clients is that their hair is so bulky, but what they would really like is to have these
09:37 really airy, lifted, volumized, kind of wispy curls.
09:41 So one way we can create that is we need to be doing some debulking, but as we're debulking,
09:47 we want to give lift and volume into the hair as well.
09:50 So one way that we do that is by cutting, again taking these vertical sections.
10:00 And so depending on the head shape, depending on where you're working throughout this haircut,
10:07 this is where you would decide, do I want, do they have a ton of hair?
10:11 If so, then I'm going to come in pretty aggressive and debulk a lot.
10:15 Do they have finer hair?
10:17 Maybe they still have some bulk in some areas, but it is fine, so we need to be a little
10:21 bit more cautious of how much hair we're taking out.
10:24 In that case, we're going to go move a little bit further away from the head shape to be
10:27 a little less aggressive.
10:29 Same with our elevation.
10:31 If I want to be really aggressive with how much hair I'm taking out, I'm going to have
10:34 a high elevation.
10:35 If I want to be very delicate with how much hair I'm removing and debulking, I want to
10:39 lower my elevation closer to a zero elevation so that I remove less bulk.
10:44 So these things all you can take into consideration while you're cutting your curly haired clients
10:49 so that you make sure that you give them the best shape and not just some cookie cutter
10:53 haircut that you saw someone else do, but a customized haircut for their hair and their
10:57 head shape.
10:58 So in this section, again, she has fine hair, but a lot of it, so I'm going to lower my
11:03 elevation a little bit.
11:04 I'm going to move a little bit further out from the head shape.
11:07 I'm going to adjust my finger angle so that when the shears enter the section, I've got
11:11 a very delicate entry.
11:13 It's not going to be a hard line.
11:15 So as I cut, I'm going to be lowering my elevation as well.
11:19 You can see one of my previous sections fall out there.
11:24 I went through this haircut and previously worked throughout all these sections so that
11:27 we could have a nice end result.
11:29 So you can see some of those previous sections, like I said, popping out, but what we end
11:33 up creating is this shorter to longer feel that this is going to help push these curls
11:39 up, and it's going to allow open space and movement for these curls to have room.
11:44 So whenever, if you can imagine, if you did section upon section with that technique,
11:50 you're going to have these open spaces in between each section that's going to allow
11:54 that curl all sorts of room and space to move around.
11:59 So a very cool technique.
12:00 I love utilizing that whenever I'm working with curly hair clients.
12:04 All right.
12:05 So if you're just tuning in, we're talking about curly hair cutting techniques.
12:09 Also want to remind you guys about our contest.
12:11 We want you guys, I just gave you guys some curly hair cutting techniques.
12:15 So now I want to see on our comment feed, you guys leave some tips and tricks for us.
12:19 We want to see what you guys have, what knowledge you guys have about curly hair and your, you
12:24 know, your tip that you leave for us is going to be your entry into our contest that we're
12:28 going to be giving away a full representation of our curly sexy hairline.
12:31 So definitely make sure you guys, I'm sure you guys have a curly haired client and I'm
12:35 sure you have a tip and something little trick that you've worked out on their hair.
12:39 So just type it up real quick and we'll enter you into our contest and maybe get some curly
12:43 hair products.
12:44 Amanda, Stephanie has a question.
12:47 Yes.
12:48 What is the biggest complaint you hear from your curly haired clients about getting their
12:51 haircut?
12:52 I'd have to say the biggest complaint I get from my clients about getting their haircut
12:56 is kind of the fear and the unknowing.
12:58 I think a naturally curly haired client has sat in so many chairs trying out so many stylists,
13:04 just hoping and praying that the stylist is going to be the one that knows, that figures
13:08 out this, you know, kind of this, um, mystery haircut.
13:12 But in reality, whenever you're working with sexy hair and our structure and motion cutting
13:17 system is that it lays a roadmap for you and it gives you as a stylist, the confidence
13:22 that you need to be able to build a shape, know what it's going to do, know how it's
13:26 going to perform and that confidence ends up transferring to our clients and then they're
13:30 no longer scared or they're no longer worried about coming back to us and even going into
13:36 a new different shape or a different look.
13:37 So yeah, definitely.
13:38 Great question.
13:39 So I'm going to use a little bit of our ultra curl.
13:45 Now this is a cream gel product, so I absolutely love that.
13:49 The gel portion is going to give you that supreme control over the hair and then the
13:55 cream portion is what's going to help give that soft suppleness to the hair.
13:59 What I really like to do whenever I'm talking to my clients about applying product is I
14:04 always show them.
14:05 So I definitely make sure that I show my client that this is how much product I put in my
14:09 hand.
14:10 I don't just do it behind their back.
14:11 And then what I like to do too, especially with curly hair and actually even most of
14:15 my clients, especially male clients as well, is I apply the product in two steps.
14:21 So the first application is going to be to the back and the bottom of the hair so that
14:24 I don't end up putting too much product in my hands and gooping it all over her hair.
14:29 So I'm going to work the product onto my hands actually like a lotion.
14:33 So this way, whenever I work my hands through her hair, the product that's on the palms
14:37 of my hands, the backs of my hands, in between my fingers, it's all being worked through
14:42 the hair and it's not just being gloved on in one spot.
14:46 So again, I always like to do that little tip with my male clientele too, if they're
14:51 applying product because then they know that they're not putting too much in one area.
14:55 - Amanda, one more question.
14:57 - Yes.
14:58 - What are some tips on how not to cut curly hair?
15:02 What are some don'ts?
15:04 - That's a great question also because the thing when it comes to cutting curly hair
15:08 is that there are a lot of don'ts and there are a lot of do's, but no two heads of curly
15:14 hair are the same.
15:16 So something that may be a don't and a no-no on Cherie is going to be maybe a yes on another
15:21 client.
15:22 So like with Cherie, I probably would not cut her hair with a razor.
15:26 I don't think she would be a good razor candidate just because of the fact that her hair is
15:30 fine and we could lose some control there whenever we're using a razor.
15:34 But on the other hand, say if I had a client with extremely thick, coarse hair where I
15:39 really needed to wisp out this hair and I really needed to get just a lot of carving
15:44 action happening, I'd absolutely use a razor.
15:47 So I think there's a lot of, some artists might tell you that there's rules when it
15:53 comes to cutting curly hair or styling curly hair, but I really think it boils down to
15:58 which type of curly hair you're working with.
16:00 So again, there could be some no-no's, but it really is about the type of curly hair
16:04 that you're working with.
16:06 So again, I worked that product through the hair, the Ultra Curl.
16:10 I'm going to take just another small amount and this I'm just going to work into my fingertips
16:15 and I'm just going to take the hair and twist it a little bit and work through it.
16:19 This is what I love to do after I've done a haircut on curly hair because we all know
16:24 that the number, actually there is a universal no-no.
16:28 The universal no-no is to not brush through and disrupt and rake the curls too much.
16:33 And we all know that in a haircut, we're running a fine tooth comb through the hair, so we're
16:37 doing exactly that.
16:38 So we have to reestablish the curl pattern.
16:42 So by twisting the product into the hair, we're going to help those little curl families
16:47 find their friends and they're going to get nice and linked up and then twist those coils
16:54 and then just scrunch it up a little bit just to get again that curl pattern reestablished.
17:00 You can take some curls towards the face, some curls away from the face.
17:04 That's going to help give us volume whenever those two directions are going opposite of
17:08 each other.
17:10 I personally always like to move away from the face whenever I'm working in the front
17:17 just so that the curls just have a, they land in a place that's not driving our client nuts
17:23 all day.
17:27 And again, these products, you can get them at Salon Centric.
17:30 We've got the great deals, the curl kits right now with the full-size product and then travel
17:36 sizes of our shampoo, conditioner, and curling cream.
17:39 And again, those are $13.48.
17:43 And then if you are just interested in the shampoo, conditioner, and the curling cream,
17:48 we have a Try Me kit for $7.25 that has the travel sizes of those.
17:54 I'll continue to twist through these.
17:58 And we've just got a few minutes left of being live, so if you have been thinking of your
18:03 curly hair tip that you wanted to share, please add it because we want to make sure that you
18:08 guys all get entered to win our full lineup of our Curly Sexy Hair products.
18:14 And again, the way you get entered to win is in the comment section.
18:17 Leave us a tip, a curly hair cutting tip, something that you use all the time behind
18:23 the chair and just let us know and then that will be your entry into our contest.
18:28 So I always like to finish with a little bit of diffusing.
18:32 Typically what I recommend to my clients if, let's say they tend to get very frizzy, I
18:36 have, I would say majority of my naturally curly clients tell me they air dry.
18:40 So what I recommend to them, especially because we just created this haircut that has volume
18:45 to it, I recommend go ahead and dry, air dry roughly 80%, get a lot of that majority of
18:51 that moisture out of the hair, for the last 20% or so, take your blow dryer and just give
18:56 it a little bit of diffusing just to add that volume back into the hair.
19:00 This is our Smart Lock blow dryer from Sexy Hair.
19:06 I always like to curl, or excuse me, to dry curly hair in negative ionic mode.
19:12 So in negative mode, the light will be on.
19:14 I like to have the heat setting on warm and the speed on low.
19:20 So that allows just the minimal disruption for our curls just to get that little bit
19:25 of volume while drying the hair as well.
19:31 So again, I typically like to recommend 80% or so air drying and then coming back with
19:37 the diffuser at the last 20% just to get a little bit of extra volume into the look.
19:46 So just to recap for you guys, we talked about some curly hair cutting tips.
19:49 When the video's over, you guys can of course go back and watch the video, but we want to
19:53 really of course again, get your engagement, leave us those curly hair cutting tips, just
19:58 a few moments left.
19:59 And I want to recap over our curly hair products.
20:02 So we've got our Curl Power, we've got Curling Cream, we've got Curl Control and Ultra Curl
20:09 for strong control.
20:10 And of course the shampoo and conditioner to give your curls ultra moisturization.
20:15 And again, all of these products are available at Salon Centric.
20:18 So to wrap up, I want to give Salon Centric a huge thank you for having us at Sexy Hair.
20:23 We love Salon Centric.
20:24 We partner with Salon Centric to do education all over the country.
20:28 We've got educators, hundreds of educators all over the country.
20:31 So if you're say in a small town in the Midwest and you think maybe there's not a class near
20:36 you, get on saloncentric.com, search under Sexy Hair and I guarantee you there's a nearby
20:41 class where you can get Sexy Hair techniques, product usage and some of the same inspiration
20:46 that we've had today.
20:47 So again, guys, thank you so much.
20:50 Leave those curly hair cutting tips in the comment section and we'll see you next time.
