00:00 Sorry, a little higher.
00:01 - No, go again.
00:02 - Just for a sec.
00:03 Hi everybody, I'm Chad Kenyon with Olaplex,
00:06 and we're at the Ramirez Fan Salon in Beverly Hills.
00:09 We're going to be doing a class today.
00:11 I have a model, and we were originally going to do
00:14 this class only in Spanish, because we have
00:16 a new Spanish users group for Olaplex.
00:19 And right now it's called De Mano Con Olaplex,
00:23 and we want to push people over to that group,
00:25 but I thought it would be nice to talk to you guys first
00:27 in English, and give you some tips,
00:30 and watch a little bit of my balayage in English.
00:33 And then any of you that know Spanish speaking,
00:35 that you have Spanish speaking friends,
00:37 or if you speak Spanish, definitely go right now
00:39 and ask for permission to join the Spanish speaking group.
00:42 De Mano Con Olaplex.
00:44 And we'll let you in, and then you can be
00:46 on the next segment of this, which will be all in Spanish.
00:48 Okay, so I have my model already in the chair.
00:51 She's been pre-cut by Donovan, he did a really great job.
00:55 And so I'm going to show you guys how I'm going to formulate
00:57 for my balayage, and then we'll go do a little consultation
01:01 with my client, okay?
01:03 Want to follow me to the color room?
01:04 - Morning, morning.
01:07 - Okay.
01:09 - Busy, busy color room.
01:11 - Okay.
01:14 - Oh, how cool, wait, one sec.
01:15 Don is saying we have a group of students
01:17 from Central Texas Beauty College
01:19 assembled right now and watching.
01:21 - Oh, amazing, that's great.
01:23 - Hi guys.
01:23 - Hi guys.
01:25 - All right, let's get to it.
01:26 So yeah, so this is my lightener that I always use,
01:29 Solaris lightener, it's a clay-based lightener.
01:32 It's from Eugène Verma in Paris, and it's really great.
01:35 It gives me the perfect consistency to paint with.
01:39 It just goes on really smooth.
01:41 I can make it chalkier if I want,
01:42 depending on the client's hair.
01:44 And of course I'm going to be using Olaplex number one
01:47 and number two, and my client will go home
01:49 with number three, always.
01:50 So I'm going to mix these two things.
01:54 I have a 50 volume, you can't get this everywhere.
01:55 You can't get it in LA though.
01:57 And once that's mixed, then I'll add this, the number one.
02:01 You always add Olaplex number one
02:02 after you mix the developer and the lightener.
02:06 Okay, so this is Marty, my assistant.
02:09 He's going to mix, and that's Sierra, my other assistant.
02:12 They're going to mix up for me right now,
02:15 and we're going to go out and talk to my client.
02:18 - Oh yes.
02:19 - Do a little consultation.
02:20 - Let's get to know her.
02:21 - Get to know me.
02:22 - Get to know you.
02:24 - Color by Slim.
02:25 - So hi, so here we are with Eva live.
02:34 So what was it that you told me you wanted?
02:38 - I wanted something where I don't have to
02:40 do hair for three months and color.
02:44 I'm a mom, I work full time,
02:46 and I want something that is easy going,
02:48 yet it's going to last a long time,
02:51 where again, I don't have to be coming in every month.
02:53 - Exactly.
02:54 - So last time I did her balayage,
02:56 it was like three or four years ago.
02:57 - Left it, by the way.
02:58 - And we never retouched it.
02:59 It just grew out, and it looked good through every phase.
03:03 That was a long time ago, because none of it's in here now.
03:05 Like I said, she just got it cut by Donna,
03:09 but there was still none of it in there.
03:10 What'd you cut it, like two, three inches?
03:12 Yeah, you guys will see all the before and after pictures
03:14 on the Olaplex Instagram stories,
03:17 probably on Instagram as well,
03:19 and also on my Instagram, colorbychadkenyon.
03:22 So if you're not following me yet,
03:23 hop over there after this.
03:25 Yeah, I post on my clients on there.
03:28 - She's onto it.
03:29 - Yeah, and you can probably find an old picture of Britney's
03:31 still, if you go back far enough,
03:33 from the first time we worked together.
03:35 But anyway, so they're mixing for me,
03:37 and what we're gonna do is some balayage.
03:39 I'm gonna keep it really,
03:43 it's going to look disconnected when I'm done,
03:46 but I will do some threads up here,
03:49 right around the face frame,
03:52 and a couple threads up here too,
03:54 and then I'll do my color melt,
03:56 and it'll be very diffused and very soft,
03:58 and you won't really know where the highlights start.
04:03 You'll know where they stop,
04:04 but you won't know where they start.
04:06 They just kind of come out of nowhere.
04:08 Ready?
04:08 - They come out of nowhere.
04:09 - They come out of nowhere.
04:11 This is my lightener.
04:13 Again, Eugene Perma, Solaris.
04:15 I love it.
04:17 - Nice consistency.
04:18 - Yeah, yeah, and I change the consistency
04:21 depending on the hair texture,
04:24 depending on the look I want.
04:26 If I need to saturate more,
04:27 then I'll do a little more liquid.
04:29 But today I really want to do mostly surface lightening.
04:33 I will use my paddle,
04:35 which you'll see I always work with a paddle,
04:37 like a wooden paddle,
04:39 when I want to saturate a little more,
04:41 like on the ends, and sometimes on the sides.
04:43 You'll see how that works.
04:45 - We have Wendy asking,
04:46 "What's the benefit of Olaplex for dark hair?"
04:49 - Olaplex is for all hair.
04:51 - All hair?
04:51 - Yeah, it doesn't matter if it's,
04:56 it's good for virgin hair, it's good for,
04:58 like I use Olaplex number one in every formula I mix.
05:02 I won't use a formula
05:03 if it doesn't have Olaplex number one in it.
05:06 The benefit is that anytime Olaplex
05:09 touches your client's hair,
05:10 whether it's number two by itself,
05:12 or number one mixed with your lightener,
05:16 your base color, your gloss, your toner,
05:18 you know, your perm, your relaxer,
05:22 anytime it touches the hair,
05:25 it's rebuilding broken disulfide bonds.
05:27 We all have broken disulfide bonds,
05:29 even if our hair's virgin.
05:30 We, our hair, our disulfide bonds break
05:33 by over styling,
05:34 so you can, your hair can never be too healthy,
05:38 and you cannot overuse Olaplex,
05:40 like you can like proteins, for example.
05:43 So, yeah, so it's definitely good for dark hair.
05:46 I'm gonna be lightening the hair,
05:50 so right now, it's, I have Olaplex number one in here
05:53 to mitigate any damage that would happen
05:56 if I didn't have Olaplex number one in there.
05:58 So yeah, it's gonna mitigate right now.
06:01 And then after I'm done, as I rinse each section,
06:06 you'll see, I towel dry,
06:08 and I apply Olaplex number two to it right away.
06:10 - Yes.
06:12 - And that's, we call that a mini treatment,
06:13 an Olaplex mini treatment.
06:15 You can also wait 'til you're done with the whole head,
06:17 and then apply Olaplex number two,
06:19 but I like to do it like that.
06:22 Okay, and so I always take three sections.
06:26 I always ask my client where their part is,
06:28 and you said this is your part right here, right?
06:30 - Yeah, it will be either or, the middle, side.
06:33 - You flip it a lot?
06:35 - Mm, sometimes, yeah.
06:37 - Where do you wear it almost all the time?
06:39 Is that, or can you not answer that?
06:41 - Probably to the side.
06:43 - Like that?
06:44 - Try to, yeah.
06:45 - Okay.
06:46 - Well, actually no, middle.
06:47 - Middle.
06:48 So I'm gonna do it in the middle.
06:49 See, that's really important,
06:50 because if I wouldn't have asked that,
06:52 if I would have just balayaged with this as the part,
06:57 it would be, it would be like not balanced.
07:00 It would be too heavy.
07:01 If she wore it down the middle on one side,
07:03 it would be too heavy.
07:04 So it's really important that you ask them
07:05 what their part is all the time.
07:09 Just, yeah, perfect.
07:10 And Donovan's saying that he cut it over, down the middle.
07:13 There's Donovan over there.
07:14 He did the cut, he's amazing.
07:15 We're gonna talk to him later too.
07:16 - Zoom in.
07:17 (laughing)
07:19 And sectioning is really important, right?
07:26 - Yeah, I mean, it's everything.
07:27 You need clean sections when working.
07:32 - Giving you guys a nice close-up
07:34 of her current color right now,
07:36 so you can really get a sense of what we're doing here.
07:39 And keep in mind, we're going live
07:43 in the Spanish Olaplex users group,
07:46 facebook.com/group/demanoconolaplexoficial.
07:51 So we're only gonna be live here for about 10 minutes or so.
07:55 So ask any questions that you guys have,
07:58 and we'll have Chad answer them.
07:59 - And then, if you wanna follow us,
08:00 and you do speak Spanish, even if you don't,
08:04 ask right now for permission to get into the users group,
08:07 and then you can see everything else in Spanish.
08:09 And like I said, we will have the final results
08:11 on Olaplex's Instagram and Facebook,
08:13 but we would love to have you guys join
08:16 for the Spanish-speaking segment.
08:18 - And also, Paris So Visual,
08:21 even if you don't speak Spanish,
08:23 why not just join and watch Chad work?
08:26 You know?
08:26 - Yeah, but join now so we have time to let you in,
08:29 'cause it's a closed group.
08:30 - Take a sip, Chad.
08:31 You're about to go for the long haul.
08:33 (chattering)
08:36 - Let's see, Kyle and Lily, is it true
08:42 the longer you leave number two or number three,
08:44 the better, or max 20 minutes?
08:46 Yes, the longer, the better.
08:47 Just keep in mind, once it dries out, it's no longer active,
08:50 so there's no use keeping it on an extreme amount of time.
08:53 But for me, personally, I've used my number three
08:56 for at least a couple of hours.
08:57 - Yeah, I think if what you said,
09:01 once it dries, it does stop working,
09:03 but I encourage my clients to sleep in it.
09:05 Some of my clients go to the gym in it.
09:08 Some people put it on even as a styling product,
09:12 because it's, as I said, it's on your hair,
09:14 so it's multiplying the disulfide bonds.
09:17 So some people even put it on dry hair.
09:18 Whatever works for you.
09:20 I think the important thing is just to get it on your hair.
09:22 You know what I mean?
09:23 Not get caught up in, am I using it wrong,
09:24 or am I using it right?
09:26 The ingredient, the active ingredient in Olaplex
09:29 really does all the work for you,
09:31 as long as it's on your hair.
09:33 Do you wear ponytails a lot?
09:35 - No.
09:36 - No?
09:37 Okay, great.
09:38 So then, if she wore ponytails,
09:39 I would do some little pieces under here,
09:41 but she doesn't, and we want a natural,
09:43 natural inspired look,
09:45 so I'm not gonna do any underneath there.
09:47 I'm gonna start up here.
09:49 - Let me go back on some comments.
09:51 Johnny says, "I speak Spanish too."
09:53 So go ahead and join that group,
09:55 so you can continue watching this demo at 12.15.
09:58 - Yeah.
09:59 - Joseph, you join the Spanish group
10:01 by searching De Mano Con Olaplex Oficial.
10:05 - Yeah, and they have to ask permission,
10:07 so it's important that you ask permission now,
10:09 so we can approve it,
10:10 and then you can already be approved
10:12 to watch as soon as we go over into Spanish at 12.15, right?
10:17 - Yes.
10:18 - Okay.
10:19 (upbeat music)
10:21 Okay, here's my wooden paddle.
10:38 And these are the new Frameware brushes.
10:42 I really love them.
10:43 You see that?
10:45 They're shaped like a paintbrush.
10:48 - Those are cool.
10:49 - Yeah, it's really nice for balayaging.
10:53 - I haven't seen those.
10:54 - I'm really picky about my brushes,
10:56 and I like a brush that's wide this way,
11:00 and has long bristles,
11:01 and that the bristles don't fray easily,
11:05 because sometimes I want very precise threads,
11:08 and this brush, nobody does it.
11:10 - Fantastic.
11:13 - Sounded like a commercial, but I swear it wasn't.
11:16 - No.
11:17 It didn't sound like that at all.
11:18 You're always natural.
11:19 - Yeah, no, I'm just really into it.
11:21 - We have someone asking a student,
11:25 these are from the students watching in Texas.
11:27 - Yeah, hi guys.
11:28 - A student is asking about the dangers
11:30 of using a high volume.
11:32 How do you avoid melting the hair?
11:34 - Well, so I'm using Olaplex in it,
11:37 so that helps for one,
11:39 but we also, you know, if you're a professional,
11:42 you're gonna be watching the hair the whole time.
11:44 You're checking on it.
11:46 I never would just paint a client's head,
11:49 and then go eat lunch.
11:51 You know what I mean?
11:51 We check constantly.
11:52 We're never away from the client.
11:54 And it's a really good question,
11:56 because what I do actually is,
11:57 as soon as I see that a section
11:59 is at the desired level of lightness,
12:01 we rinse immediately.
12:02 So yeah, that answers your question.
12:05 - There you go.
12:06 Always use good judgment, you guys.
12:08 - You guys, you're gonna see we're moving the chair.
12:10 Go ahead and pull.
12:11 Because there's cold air coming out of the vent right there,
12:13 and while I love it, for me,
12:15 it slows down the lightening process on the hair here.
12:18 So you have to take all those things into consideration.
12:21 Everything can influence the chemical process.
12:25 - That's actually amazing.
12:26 Something that you would think is so little,
12:28 like the environment that you're working in.
12:31 - You won't get the lift you want if it's under cold air.
12:35 And you'll see in a second, we even use heat
12:38 to speed up the lightening process.
12:45 - Will you tell us a little bit about how you are painting?
12:49 Are you taking V-sections?
12:50 Are you doing it a little, whatever floats your boat?
12:54 - Yeah, I want it to look really natural.
12:57 I don't, every once in a while,
13:00 I mean, I guess I do paint V-sections,
13:01 but I really do a lot of feathering.
13:03 I don't do a lot of lines.
13:04 I don't like horizontal lines,
13:06 and I don't like vertical lines.
13:08 So yeah, I guess the structure,
13:11 if you want to go back to that,
13:13 would be like a V-section.
13:14 Sometimes I do a W-section.
13:17 More often than not, I'm painting lots of lighter hair,
13:21 or darker hair, because I do all my lowlights
13:22 as polyeshed as well.
13:24 But, so I want it to look very textured,
13:26 and I want it to look like a block of natural hair.
13:29 So yeah, so I think mine is a little more freehand.
13:31 - And I know this is a frequent question.
13:44 Can we see how much product you're putting onto the bristle?
13:48 - Yeah, of course.
13:49 So I like it to get really flat on here.
13:53 Clean my brush, because if it's really close to the board,
13:58 I can just sweep my brush across it, my color brush,
14:02 and it gets a nice,
14:05 a nice pick up there, right?
14:08 So.
14:12 - Stephanie, are there any benefits
14:14 to using Olaplex number one without using number two?
14:17 Like we always say, Olaplex is best as a three-step system.
14:22 You're still getting benefits using each on its own,
14:25 but you're not getting the full benefit.
14:27 So I personally don't think,
14:28 and I know Chad doesn't think number two is optional.
14:31 - Yeah, number two is not optional.
14:32 It's like, I'm very like hardcore about it.
14:35 But the thing is, Olaplex number one,
14:38 I'm using right now to mitigate any damage
14:40 that would happen during the chemical process.
14:42 But number two is the opportunity
14:45 to have it on the hair all by itself.
14:48 It's not fighting against anything.
14:49 There's no pushback.
14:51 It's just on there, rebuilding the box by itself.
14:54 And it makes such a difference
14:58 when you do everything as it's meant to be done.
15:01 - Yes.
15:02 - And then definitely the number three,
15:03 they should sell your appliances and all,
15:07 because it really, really works.
15:10 - Just a quick brief mention.
15:12 If anyone on the Olaplex team,
15:14 educators are watching right now.
15:16 I know that there are a lot of people saying
15:18 that they're joining in the Spanish group as we speak.
15:21 So if you guys can maybe help us out,
15:23 help Chad and I out,
15:24 and start adding people in the group and accepting them
15:27 so everyone can benefit from the 12-15 class,
15:30 just let me know in the comments.
15:32 - Yeah, you can do an accept all.
15:38 - I'm thrilled.
15:39 Yeah, and it's the English group too,
15:46 the Olaplex users group.
15:49 In English, I encourage everyone to go on that one as well,
15:52 because just like the Spanish one,
15:54 it's a place where we all get to be in the same room,
15:58 you know, so to speak,
15:59 and exchange ideas and support one another,
16:02 always supporting one another,
16:04 never, never bullying anybody.
16:05 We don't permit that.
16:07 There's not on-brand for Olaplex.
16:10 - I love you, Chad.
16:11 - Yeah, no, it's all about helping one another,
16:16 really, to be honest.
16:17 - Uh-oh, Shannon, dun-dun-dun,
16:19 what if you bought Olaplex number three on Amazon?
16:22 - It's not real.
16:23 We, you know, Olaplex is never sold to Amazon,
16:29 and it looks like it, it smells like it,
16:32 we've done a really good job of copying it,
16:33 but it's not real.
16:34 And when I share that to some of my clients,
16:37 you know, they buy it here at the salon, of course,
16:40 but when I share that with them,
16:41 a lot of times they'll say, "Oh, you know what?
16:43 "After I ran out, I bought some online on Amazon,
16:46 "and it didn't do anything to my hair.
16:47 "Like, I didn't feel that same oomph
16:50 "that I was feeling from the Olaplex that I gave to them."
16:53 And so, yeah, you definitely don't wanna get anything
16:57 on Amazon, just for the mere fact that, you know,
17:01 Olaplex hasn't sold to them,
17:03 so there's no way they could access it.
17:05 - Devon says, "Build people up, not tear them down."
17:10 - That's right, Devon.
17:11 - Beautiful section.
17:16 I mean, beautiful piece.
17:19 So you guys, we're only on here for five more minutes or so.
17:25 This is just a little quickie before we go live in Spanish,
17:28 so please join that Spanish group or search for it,
17:30 De Mano Con Olaplex Oficial.
17:33 You can go to Facebook.com/groups/
17:37 De Mano Con Olaplex Oficial and join that,
17:40 or just search it,
17:41 and we will be live there in Spanish at 12.15 p.m.
17:47 - Did you spell it for them, D-E?
17:50 - I'll put it in, I'll actually one-up that
17:54 and put it in the comments right now.
17:56 - Yeah.
17:57 - So give me just a moment, you guys, I'm just gonna--
17:59 - Oh, you can copy and paste it.
18:01 - It's based for, let's see.
18:05 - Just like a little too much,
18:06 'cause we run out more.
18:07 Yeah, so I always have a towel here to clean my hands on,
18:13 'cause now's a good time,
18:16 and 'cause I like my hands to be clean,
18:19 and if they have too much water in them,
18:21 I transfer the water to the hair,
18:23 and then that can slow down
18:24 or cancel the lightening process.
18:27 So another little thing that I'm really picky about,
18:31 but it makes a big difference.
18:33 - De mano con Olaplex Oficial.
18:46 Okay, guys, I just posted that in the comments there.
18:48 Please let me know if that's working.
18:50 Yes, Donna, he's using clay, basically.
18:53 - Yes, I am, it's Solaris from Eugene Perma.
18:57 - Danny says, "Thank you for sharing
18:59 "your time and knowledge, Chad."
19:01 - Oh my gosh, it's my pleasure.
19:03 You know, so many people helped me get to where I am,
19:05 and not to sound cheesy,
19:09 but it's really about paying it forward.
19:11 I strongly believe that in order for us to hold on
19:15 to all the good things we have in life,
19:16 we have to help other people.
19:18 That's just how the universe works, in my humble opinion.
19:22 - True.
