00:00 Hey guys! Hi guys! I'm Stephanie and today I am going to show you how to do some flat
00:08 waves with the new Black Gold Flat Iron from Hot Tools. So let's get started. Okay, we
00:17 always want to prep the hair first, a little heat defense. Comb it through. What I really
00:29 like to do with these waves, you can see that we started down here, is it just gives a cool
00:34 different shape to the hair. So I start off with a two-ish section panel. Pick up your
00:44 Hot Tools. And we're set at 305 today because Christina here, she has processed blonde,
00:50 beautiful blonde hair. And we don't want to go too hot because we don't want to injure
00:54 her hair. So when I start off, I'm going to keep it flat and I like to pull on it first
00:59 to create the first C shape and then the rest I'm going to tap and then I'm going to feed
01:05 it into the iron. Tap and feed it in. Tap and feed it in. I'm a little nervous this
01:13 morning so if the first one doesn't come out, the rest of them will, I promise. So you can
01:20 see there's our first wave. I like to leave them just like this so that later on I can
01:27 run my fingers through them so it's kind of in its set pattern here. But if you want them
01:32 a little bit looser, you can feel free to rake your fingers through right away. So we'll
01:37 take our next section. By the way, I didn't say this yet, but if you don't know me, I'm
01:45 @stuffstyles on Instagram and you can come and see some of the flat waves I've done in
01:53 the past and see some of the other styling that I like to do with braids and whatnot.
02:02 You can check me out. My model here is Christina. She is @makechristinaup on Instagram and on
02:10 Facebook and she's a very talented makeup artist. So you'll be wanting to follow her
02:16 along for sure too. And you can see how quick this is. And I'd like to say thank you to
02:28 American Salon for hosting me today. I love American Salon and I'm super grateful that
02:35 I have this opportunity. And thank you to Hot Tools for asking me to come out here and
02:40 do this. I say out here, we're at my salon. But to pop in and do this for you guys today.
02:47 All right. Does anybody have any questions?
02:52 I have one. Why a flat wave rather than the other conventional waves?
03:02 Well, flat waves are just, they're a little bit more modern and it just gives you a different
03:09 fabric for the hair, right? We've all seen ribbon waves and ridged waves and now we have
03:16 these cool flat waves that look very beachy and very organic when you rake them through.
03:23 And it's just a cool different way to do hair. All right. So that section's done.
03:31 I'm taking about a two inch section down here. You can take them thinner or thicker depending
03:41 on your desire and your desired outcome.
03:47 We have a question from Chantel. Did you prep the hair with anything?
03:55 Hi Chantel. That's a great question. So we prepped her hair. She did a regular shampoo
04:00 and conditioner this morning and the only thing she put in her hair was a little bit
04:05 of oil on the ends and then she blow dried. And then what I did just now is I just used
04:12 a heat blocking spray from Kenra. It's the, yeah, heat blocking spray, Kenra. It's my
04:20 favorite. And that is going to protect her hair from the iron. The iron's only set at
04:25 305 by the way and look at what we got on such a low temperature. So you don't always
04:30 need to go in at the highest heat setting to make your waves happen. You can see as
04:36 I'm going down, I'm pushing and can you see how my wrist is kind of turning as we go?
04:44 And all I'm doing is tap, tap, tap all the way down.
04:48 We have a couple shout outs. Yes. From Bianca. Hi Bianca from the other room. Yes. And Jane.
05:02 Hi. Good morning Jane. Where's everybody from? Where are you guys all watching from?
05:09 And then Chantel has another question. What would you use on a client with fresh hair
05:17 and that curls don't last long? Well, okay. So it all starts when the hair is wet, right?
05:23 So you want to do shampoo, you know, maybe a light conditioner depending on the density
05:31 of their hair. And then maybe you want to go in with a cream or a mousse. I like creams.
05:38 I'm not a huge fan of mousses, but I love a good styling cream. So go in with that and
05:44 then I'll set the memory of the hair. With that, I'll use a round brush and kind of get
05:50 that memory baked in there. Then I'll come back through with a heat protectant spray.
05:55 This heat protection spray has a control of 22, which means it's a pretty high hold. So
06:01 that's going to do a lot for me. Then I maybe will spray with some hairspray in between
06:08 sections, a light working hairspray, and then finish it with a finishing hairspray and you
06:13 should be good to go. It's all about the prep, right? Say that again? Would you tend to iron
06:23 your hair? Oh, yeah. If it's a, sorry, if the hair is super resistant, I may go a little
06:31 bit higher with the heat. But let's say it's Christina. I don't know that I would. It all
06:37 depends on how thick and dense the hair is and how compromised the hair is. These waves
06:50 are pretty forgiving too. I don't know if you can tell, but not everything feeds in
06:57 perfectly. But once it lays down, you can see it all kind of forms back in place just
07:04 like that. You also, if you feel like it's not perfect, you can come back through and
07:12 just kind of tap it. I've even maybe curled it like this and then tapped it like that.
07:20 If you really want to form that in and then it'll stay. See? There we go. Okay. Two more
07:28 sections and the whole backside of her head is going to be done. You can see that this
07:31 is pretty quick. I'm also using clips today that don't dent the hair. You'll see that
07:43 sometimes when you use regular clips, they can cause dents in the hair and we don't want
07:49 that. So I'm using clips that are cushioned on the inside. Okay. Take this section again.
07:57 It's about two by about one and a half ish. All right. So we have viewers from all over.
08:06 We have Heather from South Carolina, Mandy from Ohio. We have a couple of viewers from
08:15 Canada. Chantal's from Canada. We have people from Las Vegas, Stevens from New York. Wow.
08:24 How exciting. Have you guys ever been to California? It was cold here last week and now it's nice
08:33 and beautiful again, but in Canada, my friend Kelly, she lives in Winnipeg and she was showing
08:39 us yesterday that it's snowing there already. We're very spoiled here in California. All
08:49 right. Never been to Ohio. I'd like to go to Ohio. You ever been to Ohio? Nope. It's
09:07 probably cold in Buffalo right now too. I think it's snowing. Is it? I think. See, look
09:15 at how pretty that is. I mean, if you wanted to, you could just let them go out like this.
09:20 It's a little Medusa, but it's kind of cute. All right. Like I said, let's go over this
09:28 again. The first thing that I like to do is you can push or pull. I'm kind of going the
09:33 same way on this, but I'm going to pull it back just to start my C pattern and then I'm
09:38 going to push up. So as I push, I'm tapping and you can see that I rotate my wrist back
09:46 and forth to try to keep that C motion going. And your elevation doesn't have to be high.
09:57 I think I just do that to try to keep the C going. Look how cute that is. All right.
10:08 One more section. Let's push that over onto this side. Any other questions for me? You
10:31 want to talk about the iron? So this Hot Tools iron is part of the new black gold line that
10:39 they just recently released. And I have to say this black gold, the whole line is probably
10:46 my favorite ever by Hot Tools. The black gold in particular, it has the combination of their
10:54 24 karat gold plating, has titanium in it, and it's so, so beautiful. This plate, these
11:04 are floating plates, and this is the one and a quarter. And what happens with the floating
11:11 plates is it just really ensures that every piece of hair is getting touched. I know that
11:19 sounds obvious, but I think that you'd be surprised. I don't have any cold spots as
11:27 we go down. I have a couple questions about the iron. Awesome. What temperature are you
11:33 using? Today I'm using it at 305, as you can see here. It goes up to 455 degrees, but we
11:42 obviously don't need that for Christina. All right, so we're going to start the sides here.
11:48 It's funny because this is usually the side that I end on, my lefty ways. I think that
12:01 the biggest trick in doing these waves is to make sure that your width isn't too big
12:06 and your depth isn't too big. When it is, what can happen is it can just get a little
12:11 bit bunchy, and then you don't get the results that maybe that you want. And again, because
12:24 I'm left-handed, you'll see that the Hot Tools logo is upside down, but that doesn't matter.
12:32 So you can see here, it got a little bit away from me, and so it fell out a little bit,
12:36 but that's okay. Tap this back out. The new Black Gold line also has a 1" iron that you
13:00 can use if you prefer a thinner model. I like this one, though. I feel like it gets it done.
13:09 Another question? How much is the iron? The iron retails for around $80, and I am told
13:19 that it's sold at Ulta, and I think for the professionals out there, it'll be your salon-centric
13:27 and your Cosmos and your other local distributors. But for the customers, definitely check out
13:36 Ulta. All right. I think we've only been doing this for about 10 minutes, right? And we're
13:48 almost finished. Let's see. The continual tapping is how you make sure that you don't
13:58 get any lines in the hair. So cute. What about you, Christina? Do you have any questions?
14:15 This is kind of you, right? Yeah, I'm very beachy. Yeah. My beach girl. Feed it, feed
14:26 it, feed it. There you go. I love it. Is that cool? All right. Last section on this side.
14:45 I feel like this pattern would be so nice. I got an updo. Oh, yeah. Outside of an updo.
14:58 Yes, yes. We can do an updo on you afterwards. Yeah. Yeah, you want to? I'll find somewhere
15:03 to go with the updo. On this Monday. On this Monday? The rest of your clients can see you
15:09 have all fancy hair. You know what's really cool about hot tools as well is that they
15:19 have pulse technology. And with pulse technology, what that does is it sends a signal from the
15:27 motor to the end of the plates so that it's checking the heat constantly to make sure
15:34 that it gets hot, it stays hot, and that you never get any cold spots in your plates. What's
15:54 really cool about these waves too is that if you left them, they'd be very vintage,
15:59 right? Yeah. Very great Gatsby. Like a finger wave. Yeah, exactly. Without the fingers.
16:09 We all resist finger waves in beauty school, but guess what? We all use them every day,
16:14 right? Look how cute that is. All right. Last side. So we have a couple new viewers. If
16:28 you want to just go over what we're doing again. Okay. So I am Stephanie. Where do I
16:37 look? Hi. Stephanie. I am @stuffstyles on Instagram. And I'm here today with American
16:44 Salon and with Hot Tools. And we are going over the new Black Gold Flat Iron from Hot
16:51 Tools. And I'm so excited that American Salon invited me to be here. I love American Salon.
17:00 And I love Hot Tools, of course. So we are just going over some flat waves and how to's
17:05 on flat waves. So we take our section. I pre-sprayed it with some heat shield so that we don't
17:13 cause any damage with any heat. I'm going to take her hair and I'm going to create a
17:18 C-section here. And then I'm going to start feeding the hair in to create these waves.
17:28 You can see I'm rotating my wrist just ever so slightly back and forth to create these
17:37 waves. There you go. Let's do it again. If it's easier for you to push to get a backwards
17:54 C to start, then you can push instead of pull. But I like to pull. And you want to use a
18:00 delicate hand when you do pull because you don't want to create a line in the hair. Another
18:06 question? Sharon would like to know if this can work with extensions. Oh, absolutely.
18:10 Absolutely. Sorry, let me just grab my tray over here. Actually, let's turn her. My cord
18:17 is very long. There we go. Yes, I do this with extensions all the time. You can do that
18:27 with any method as long as it's human hair, of course. And always protect the hair. Always,
18:36 always. I'll just show you. I only want to do it once because I like pulling it. But
18:49 if you wanted to push, so typically I would go like this to start it. But if you wanted
18:56 to push, you're just going to push this way and see how you create the form going that
19:02 way. And then again, you're going to push up, slightly rotate your wrist back and forth.
19:13 And even though we're only using 300 degree heat or 305, you can see that that's all we
19:20 need. You don't need to get crazy hot. All right, this is against her face. You think
19:29 you want to think about how you want it to lay. So I'll go ahead and pull it again. And
19:37 I'm pushing, pulling, just like that. Okay. All right, two more sections. And this is
20:07 completed. All right. Sorry, I had it upside down before. Stephanie would like to know
20:25 if Hot Tools comes with warranty with their products. They do. They have a, they do have
20:30 a warranty. I believe, you know, yeah, I think that you should check their website for sure,
20:40 but they do have a warranty. And we are getting a couple questions about the heat spray. Yes.
20:46 Which product you're using. I'm using the Kenra heat blocking spray. That's just my,
20:57 my personal favorite is, is an aerosol versus just a spray. So this is the one that I'm
21:04 using, but you just need to use the one that works best for you, honestly. And how wide
21:13 are you in thicker? You make your section. Okay. So this is our last section. So let's
21:18 go over that again. So the width that I'm taking is about one to one and a half inches
21:25 wide here. And then I'm taking a section about one and a half inches thick as well. And the
21:32 reason that you want to kind of be careful about that is because if you take a section
21:37 that's too wide, let's just show you, let's say we were going to be crazy and take this
21:42 whole section. You're going to see that not only, and the plates are only this wide, so
21:49 I'm overshooting that, but let's say we've got the exact plate width. When you take it
21:54 like this, you kind of lose it. Well, maybe, maybe I didn't lose it there, but what happens
22:00 is it gets bunchy underneath here. And then you have pieces that are out like this and
22:06 you just don't have as much control. So try it. But what I like is about one and a half
22:12 by one and a half. I feel like I personally have the most control with that particular
22:19 dimensions. And then this is our last section. So the very last time we'll go over it. I
22:25 like to pull to create the first crescent and you can see how my thumb is guiding the
22:31 hair and then I'm just going to tap, tap, tap all the way down. So I'm going to tap
22:36 and push and rotate my wrist and tap and push. And then I'm going to rotate my wrist the
22:44 other way and I continue to tap and push and then maybe lower your elevation so that you
22:51 don't lose it. And then at the very end, push it in there. And then if you do feel like
23:02 you lose the ridge, don't forget that you can always kind of group it back together
23:06 like this and then you can give it another little tap, tap, tap if you want to increase
23:12 that ridge. All right, two more sections. Here. Okay, create my C and then tap and push
23:30 and rotate your wrist. What I love about these irons too is if you're just flat ironing the
23:43 hair, it's a one pass iron. It doesn't take a whole, whole lot to get the hair nice and
23:52 straight and smooth. There you go. Okay, last piece. I'm trying really hard not to drop
24:06 anything this whole time. Knock over a tray. So far I've managed, but it's not over yet,
24:19 okay? What I do find is that if I stay up here as I'm continuing down, this tends to
24:28 not want to curl as much. So when you get to the mid shaft, drop your elevation down
24:34 and then continue pushing and pulling. For me, I get the best results than when I just
24:41 stay up here the whole entire time because when you do, the weight of the hair can't
24:46 be supported. It starts to fall and then you're controlling too much. So drop your elevation,
24:52 let this rest, and then you can go ahead and just finish that off just like that. All right,
25:00 so we're finished here. What do you think? Cool? Yeah? Okay. You like it? I love it.
25:11 So what I like to do from here is I like to use a wide tooth comb and I just like to comb
25:16 it through. So is anybody anxious about me combing this through? Sometimes I don't want
25:21 to because it just looks neat, but we're going to. Whenever I comb through any curls, you're
25:30 seeing that I'm not dragging, dragging. I'll go through the top and then I like to stick
25:35 my fingers in the hair and kind of lift up to get the rest of it. I'm not trying to pull
25:40 out the curl. I'm just trying to get through it. Okay, so we'll do the same up here. So
25:50 go through, lift it up, and comb down. This is like a totally different wave than I've
26:03 ever seen on my hair. Right? Isn't that cool? It makes such a difference. It does, right?
26:07 You can't have the same wave every day. No, that's boring. We can't be basic. No basic
26:15 allowed. You were not born to be basic, girl. I'll tell you that. Okay, so here's my biggest
26:26 challenge with these curls is if this is just an everyday, like this is awesome. This looks
26:34 so good. But let's say that you don't like how unrefined the ends are. That's okay. So
26:41 we're going to turn this into something just a little bit different. Maybe you're going
26:46 out, you got a date with your man. So what I'm going to do is I'm just going to finish
26:51 these edges a little bit and then we'll turn it up into a braid or a half updo. Sorry,
26:56 I've been looking in the mirror and not in the camera. So what I'll do with that is I
27:02 have my one inch iron here. And I'll just group a bunch together. And I'm just going
27:15 to simply turn these just like that. So it's still very organic. But it's a little bit
27:26 more refined and finished. Now I have a question as we finish. What do you guys want to see?
27:34 Do you guys want to see a braid? Do you want to see an updo? Half up? What do you guys
27:40 want to see? What do you want me to turn this into? Any thoughts? Nobody? We're waiting?
27:57 Okay. Updo and a fishtail. I like both of those. I get to braid Christina a lot because
28:11 she's got such beautiful hair. If you look at my page, you'll see her. We've got a couple
28:17 of different braids. I like the half up. What do you think? Half up? Okay, let's do a half
28:33 up. That way we can still see the texture. And show off the waves. That's right. Alright,
28:45 let's see. So I have a question. We're not going to do this today, but I am wondering,
28:53 does anybody want me to give away one of these tools from the new Black Gold set? I think
28:59 that we should do it in the month of December. What do you think? Right? Christmas gift for
29:07 you. From me to you. That would be fun. Okay. So, she's got this great face. She's an incredible
29:18 makeup artist. So let's not take away too much. But why don't we leave some down? Like
29:30 this. Yeah. Alright. And since somebody asked for a fishtail, why don't we fishtail this
29:41 back? So a fishtail is taking the outside of the left and putting it over into your
29:51 right hand. And then taking the outside of the right and taking it over. Now when you're
29:57 incorporating a fishtail onto the head and not being just loose, you need to incorporate
30:03 hair. So we're going to take it from the left over into the right and then we're going to
30:08 add some hair. So then we'll add some hair over here. And then the outside of the right
30:19 into the left. And maybe I'll add just a little bit right here, because I still want it to
30:25 stay right around her face. Okay. To the left. And what's really cool about fishtails is
30:32 you can take large sections and then small sections and then it just adds to the flavor
30:38 and creates dimension. Super cool. Okay. So from here on I'm not going to add any more
30:43 hair because I want to keep it loose. So we're going to just add hair from the top section.
30:50 My left. My left here. We have a lot of braiders out there. I like incorporating braids into
31:10 my finished look for my guests. And I have a lot of them that have daughters that they
31:18 need to do for school. So it's always fun to be able to teach them how to braid their
31:24 girls or just be cute to have their husbands take them out for dinner after they get their
31:33 hair done. All right. So I'm going to stop here because I love this texture up in here
31:40 and I don't want to lose any of that. So we're just going to keep on going. And we're going
31:47 to stop about here. So I'm just going to go down a little bit further. For somebody who
31:59 likes volume, tell me about their hair texture. That's the first question. If they have fine
32:09 hair section or fine hair texture, sorry, what I would do is I would do a braid like
32:13 this, but then what I would do is I would spray it with a little dry texture spray or
32:18 a little hairspray and then let that dry a little bit. And then you're just going to
32:24 go through and you can plump up the braid like this. Go through, just make it nice and
32:42 big. Okay. I'm going to clip this for now because we're going to pin it together. Actually,
32:50 we'll just tie it off. Now that it's secure, you want to be careful not to over pull it
33:02 once it's secured because it can have a tendency to get frizzy. So if you do just be very gentle
33:08 as you're expanding the braid, you don't want to get it too frizzy. Yeah. Everybody's very
33:17 interested in this giveaway. Oh, I would like to learn a little more. Okay. So I don't have
33:24 all of the details yet, but Hot Tools has told me that I can give away a tool this Christmas
33:35 to somebody. So I'm going to be holding a contest in the next couple of weeks. Maybe
33:41 we'll start it December 1st and I don't know what I'm going to have you do yet. I'll have
33:48 you do something, something fun, like maybe share with me your favorite holiday style
33:54 using a Hot Tool and I can choose a winner. My good friend Deetra, who is the artistic
34:01 director over at Hot Tools, I can ask her to help me select the winner and yeah, make
34:09 somebody's Christmas. So do a fun style, get it ready and then December 1st start posting
34:18 and details will definitely follow. But I think it would be really fun to give somebody
34:25 a new tool from the Black Gold line. And where can we find the details as we get closer to
34:32 the giveaway? On my Instagram page. So my Instagram page is @stephstyles on Instagram
34:39 and @stephaniehodgeshairartist I think is what I am on Facebook. I'm on Instagram a
34:47 lot more than Facebook, but I do have a page in both places. So stay tuned. And can anyone
34:56 enter? Anyone can enter, absolutely. Can they leave out of the country? Let me follow up
35:02 on that one. I hope so, but I'm not positive. Hot Tools is going to send it directly from
35:10 their warehouses, so I just want to make sure that that can happen. So we're fishtailing,
35:19 keeping our sections kind of clean. Okay. Let's spray this a little bit. It's funny
35:39 when I'm behind the chair and I do a braid on somebody for my page, I have to be very
35:44 careful because I've just shampooed them, given them a really nice blow dry, and then
35:52 I have to not gunk them up with a whole bunch of spray because I want their blow dry to
35:58 last for a few days. So it's nice that Christine is allowing me to put product in her hair
36:16 today. Oops. All right. For someone who wants to keep their hair out of their face for work
36:20 and is tired of a ponytail, what style would you recommend? Oh my goodness, a braid for
36:24 sure. Definitely a braid. Yeah. Look how cute that is. Okay. So now that we have both of
36:34 these braids in place here, we have options. We can cross it over. We can hide it. Yeah,
36:45 let's do that. So let's go here first. And then what I like to do is I like to hold it
36:52 in place and then you never want to see a bobby pin, right? So you want to go in and
36:58 I go in underneath and then I just push. Whenever you're securing the hair, you always want
37:03 to go, the hair is going down so you want to go horizontal. That way the pin can catch
37:13 the hair. If you put a pin going down, it has nothing to hold on to. Right? Okay. We'll
37:22 take this and we'll flip this end under just so you can't see it. And I know that you can
37:35 see that, but I'm going to cover it up. We'll have this come just like this. Now this is
37:41 sticking out. So what I will do is I'm going to open up this little bit right here and
37:46 we're just going to push this right through it to hide it just like that. And then we'll
37:58 secure it. Going in. Going in. There we go. One more. Any last questions that we have?
38:22 How can you make a fluffy braid on fine hair? Okay. This question gets asked a lot. So what
38:31 I will tell you is, let me show you this really fast. Just take a quick look around. How cute
38:37 is that? Still very beachy, but now it's just a little amped up. Right? Awesome. Okay. So
38:46 if you have fine hair and you want to plump it up, there's a couple of things that you
38:50 can do. You can use a crimping iron to crimp the hair. Hot Tools has a great mini crimper
38:56 that you can use to crimp the hair and that's going to make the hair fatter. If that's not
39:01 an option for you, I would take a section of the hair. Let's just do a regular braid
39:06 here and we'll take this out. So we'll just do a regular section and you're just going
39:10 to do it as loose as you can. And I'm going to say every third braid, you're going to
39:21 take and you're going to fan it out a little bit. And it's like you're fanning a deck of
39:29 cards. So see this motion that I'm making? So you're just going to fan it out just like
39:34 that. And then I'll take this side and I'll fan it out. And then you can spray it with
39:40 some texture spray or some hairspray and you'll just want to fan it. Fan it out. So see how
39:48 I took this and she has pretty fine hair and clearly we just took a tiny section here.
39:56 See how we're just pushing it out here? That just makes it nice and chubby. There, just
40:07 like that. And then I would spray it, like I said, spray it and then you'd have a fatter
40:15 braid. The other thing is that you want to make sure you're pulling from the outside
40:20 and not the inside. So you want to pull from the outside and then get in deeper and deeper.
40:26 If you just pull like this, you're going to put a hole in it. So you'll just want to pull
40:31 gently from the outside and then keep fanning until you have it nice and fat. Okay. Okay.
40:41 Are there any more questions that we have before we wrap up? Nope. Okay. I want to thank
40:47 American Salon again. I love you guys. You're my heart. You're my soul and hot tools. I
40:52 couldn't have been here at all without you guys. Thank you so much for joining me and
