2024 Range Rover Sport SV, 626 HP BMW V8 and 180 MPH Super SUV with Musical Rocking Seats
The most powerful Range Rover ever leads the revised 2024 Sport lineup with a longer PHEV range and new infotainment system.

The Range Rover Sport hasn't always been the most performance-oriented SUV on the market, despite the promise of that name. But now Land Rover has truly put 'Sport' into Sport with the launch of the new Range Rover Sport SV, the most powerful Land Rover ever.

When Land Rover introduced MY 2024 updates for the full-size Range Rover a few weeks ago, it revealed that it will be offered in the P615 with a 607 hp (615 PS) version of the BMW-sourced 4.4-liter V8.

These numbers represent huge leaps in over 567 hp (575 PS) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) pumped by the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 of the previous generation SVR that this SV replaces. The new car's zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration in 3.6 seconds sprinkles grit in the face of the old SVR, which needed 4.3 seconds, and is claimed to have 15 percent lower CO2 emissions.

But we still suspect that Land Rover may be saving an even hotter SVR for later use to tackle the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. Porsche has recently been boosted to 650 hp (659 PS), accelerates to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and 180 mph (290 km/h) thanks to the 189 mph (304 km/h) top end. Outperforms SV.

Still, to make sure a 626-hp SV feels very fast and also feels extremely controllable, Land Rover has tuned the rest of the equipment to match it, but you'll have to pay extra for some of the best parts. Desirable optional upgrades include the first 23-inch carbon wheels fitted on a production car to help reduce unsprung weight and rolling mass, and the first carbon ceramic brakes to be offered on a Land Rover SUV.

It's prominent news for Range Rover Sport's return for the 2024 season, but it's far from the only major Sport news. The P530 adopts a mild hybrid version of BMW's 4.4-liter V8, which should offer a minor improvement in efficiency, though output of 523 hp (530 PS) remains unchanged. And the old P510 plug-in hybrid has been renamed P550e to reflect the upgrade from 503 hp (510 PS) to 542 hp (550 PS) thanks to a more powerful electric motor built into the automatic transmission.

Torque has also increased on the PHEV, jumping from 700 Nm to 590 lb-ft (800 Nm), helping to reduce zero-to-100 km/h acceleration from 5.2 seconds to 4.7 seconds.

The price of the new Range Rover Sport starts at £83,620 in the UK.
