00:00 You have received instructions in the dressing rooms.
00:02 Obey my commands at all times
00:03 and protect yourselves at all times.
00:05 Shake hands and God bless.
00:06 - Thank you, Trey.
00:09 - Ooh, our main event is here.
00:13 Vargas, Portillo.
00:16 Claudia Trejo, this was an interesting one.
00:18 When we talked to both fighters and Vargas,
00:20 you see him on your screen.
00:22 He's got a lot on the line, Claudia.
00:24 - Yes, the opportunity,
00:25 like we mentioned earlier in the broadcast,
00:27 the opportunity to maybe be, you know,
00:30 look for a title opportunity in 2023,
00:32 but celebrating the birth of his son,
00:35 which is coming right around the corner.
00:37 - And, Pauly, you cannot take a Mexican fighter
00:39 with a weird record lightly at all.
00:41 - No, no, no, not this guy, not Portillo.
00:43 But there's a Portillo whose record,
00:45 when you have a closer look at it under the microscope,
00:48 shows he's a dangerous guy.
00:50 - Portillo started boxing at 16,
00:52 turned pro about a year and a half later.
00:53 He said, "My first 10 fights
00:55 were pretty much my learning experience."
00:57 He lost his first two, had a draw,
00:58 just kept on going.
01:00 He literally fought himself out of the Tijuana bars
01:02 to the main event tonight.
01:04 - But you know who did that, right?
01:05 Eric "El Terrible" Morales.
01:07 - He's from the same neighborhood,
01:08 Zona Norte, in Tijuana.
01:11 - We know what that area gives us
01:13 in terms of boxing talent.
01:15 - And usually you talk about the A-side fighter first,
01:17 but we just want to paint the picture
01:18 of how dangerous Portillo can be tonight.
01:21 - The combination there by Vargas also.
01:24 The front part is up. Guilla, right?
01:26 - Yeah, Guilla's in the same area,
01:27 trained now by Eric Morales.
01:29 And Antonio Vargas, born in Houston,
01:31 had the pedigree, the USA boxing,
01:33 everything behind him.
01:35 He was stopped once,
01:37 and the man who knocked him out in the first round,
01:41 Vargas, who is a friend of Portillo.
01:45 So the world comes back to full circle.
01:48 - I knew that's where Portillo was trying to
01:51 get off to this quick start early in this fight.
01:53 He's been very aggressive in this first round.
01:54 - Overhand right, he's trying to land,
01:56 as the man in burgundy--
01:58 or as he said, it was going to be wine.
02:00 - Stop! - Don't pick!
02:01 - Let him go. Let him go.
02:03 - Vargas coming along nicely in his career.
02:08 That 118-pound division, as you've said many times,
02:11 wide open.
02:12 He feels like he should be in the ranking with them,
02:15 but not upset about it.
02:17 I take care of business, it'll all happen.
02:20 [indistinct shouting]
02:24 - Good combination from Vargas.
02:27 He's got the Charlotte Hornet colors on.
02:29 - On who?
02:31 - I don't know what you're thinking.
02:32 Huh? - Yeah.
02:33 - Not a basketball guy.
02:35 - That was funny. You love what?
02:39 - Boxer, he's locked in. - Yep.
02:41 [indistinct shouting]
02:43 - How'd he shot from Portillo?
02:45 - Hey, at this close range,
02:47 Portillo is able to also get off his own punches.
02:49 I think Vargas has settled into a range
02:52 where he controls it from just outside
02:54 of Portillo's comfort zone,
02:55 'cause Vargas has a boxing ability
02:57 to where he can fight at middle range
02:58 while at close range, although he's good,
03:01 so is Portillo.
03:02 [indistinct shouting]
03:04 - This is the kind of fight we're gonna have.
03:06 It's scheduled for ten rounds.
03:09 They're gonna go stand toe to toe.
03:12 Strange lot of shots.
03:15 Right hand from Portillo.
03:17 Another solid right.
03:19 [indistinct shouting]
03:22 Ten seconds to go in the opening round.
03:26 Our main event, Box Lab Promotions,
03:29 night of champions on CBS Sports
03:31 from Orlando, Florida.
03:33 [bell dings]
03:34 [cheers and applause]
03:37 - The fighter you were mentioning
03:41 is El Chema Cardenas.
03:43 - Cardenas, that's right. - Yes.
03:44 And that was back in 2019,
03:46 and since then, obviously,
03:48 Cardenas has been mentoring
03:51 this young Pedraza,
03:53 and I'm telling you,
03:54 he's taking very close notes.
03:56 - And on that note, Claudia,
03:58 Manny Ramirez, Mayello,
03:59 who's in the corner of Portillo tonight,
04:03 is the same trainer that Chema has.
04:05 - Exactly. - So they know--
04:07 That's why I was wondering at the fight,
04:09 I'm like, "Why do these guys so confident?"
04:10 Right? Like, then you start talking,
04:12 you're like, "Oh, okay.
04:14 "There's a reason you're willing--
04:15 "anybody would take a fight against him."
04:17 "Everybody would take a fight against
04:18 "an underfeated fighter being a man, of course,
04:20 "but you don't come in that confident."
04:21 - Yeah. - Well, well.
04:22 You know, when you're coming off--
04:24 knocking off the Olympian
04:25 and World Champion, Rashi Warren,
04:27 you're gonna have a little bit of a chip on your shoulder
04:28 coming into your next fight.
04:30 - Absolutely.
04:31 - And I remember hearing from him himself,
04:33 anybody coming from Tijuana with a record like that
04:35 has oodles of experience. - Yeah.
04:37 - And he comes in with a big overhand right immediately.
04:39 - Drop, drop, drop, drop! - That was Portillo.
04:42 He's definitely the most experienced
04:43 and most rugged fighter
04:44 that Vargas has gone up against.
04:47 - Yeah, he's a good test.
04:49 And if you want to get to the championship level,
04:51 you got to get through guys like this.
04:54 - And here at this range, I think is where Vargas
04:55 has to take control with that jab,
04:57 you know, controlling that right there, you know.
04:59 He's got to be consistent with that right there,
05:00 'cause that'll kind of nullify
05:02 the enthusiasm Portillo-Pedroza has.
05:04 He won't be able to really work the way he wants to work,
05:06 but if you allow that closer-range fighting,
05:09 yeah, you can be effective, Vargas,
05:12 but you're also going to allow
05:13 Pedroza-Portillo to be effective,
05:15 and that's gonna let him gain his confidence,
05:17 and he's definitely gonna make him--
05:18 Nice combination there by Vargas.
05:21 - Vargas is that calm, cool, collective fighter.
05:26 He's not gonna come out and get out of his zone.
05:29 He's gonna control the fight and dictate it.
05:31 - Get hooked from Vargas. - Yeah, off the fake jab.
05:34 That's what being effective with the jab will do.
05:36 You know, you saw him do a few jabs,
05:38 and then did the fake with that,
05:40 and Portillo bit on it.
05:42 He was able to catch him with that hook.

06:08 - Good exchange there.
06:09 Good shots by Portillo,
06:10 and also a good body shot by Vargas.
06:12 [chatter]
06:15 - Very patient, Vargas. Very patient.
06:19 He's not losing his cool.
06:21 And I like also Pedrosa.
06:23 Very low. He stays very low.
06:27 [chatter]
06:30 - Vargas, Vargas, Vargas!
06:32 - Just gives him better stability in his legs.
06:34 - Yeah, absolutely.
06:36 [chatter]
06:38 - This is a fight that...
06:41 - Look at Vargas.
06:43 He wanted him, 'cause he wants to stay active.
06:45 And 2023 is the year I can make those moves.
06:50 [chatter]
06:52 - I mean, you see at this range,
06:54 maybe it's not all the shots he can do,
06:56 but you're allowing Pedrosa-Portillo
06:57 to get confidence by getting off those kind of shots,
07:00 even if they're getting blocked.
07:02 [chatter]
07:05 [chatter]
07:07 - The phantom weights, it's a division
07:09 where they make noise.
07:11 You're not gonna see many knockouts,
07:13 but you're gonna see effectiveness
07:14 and controlling and Vargas' good combination there.
07:17 - Yeah, you see the advantage of the accuracy
07:19 is there certainly on Vargas' side.
07:20 But again, I just think he can make his life easier
07:23 if he keeps his fight at middle range.
07:24 'Cause even on the inside, okay,
07:26 Pedrosa-Portillo does get off punches.
07:27 He gains his confidence.
07:28 A lot of them don't get off hand.
07:30 You see Vargas, the better sharpshooter,
07:32 gets it off in between.
07:33 He gets off the better shots.
07:34 But again, you're making--
07:35 I--my opinion, he's making the fight
07:37 a little bit more difficult on himself
07:38 by allowing Pedrosa-Portillo to stay this confident.
07:41 He can shut him down completely
07:42 if he controls a certain range.
07:44 - Khaib Royale in Orlando, Florida.
07:47 Great setup for boxing.
07:49 And tonight we're watching an Olympian
07:51 who was part of the 2016 team representing Florida.
07:56 There you see Antonio Vargas.
07:58 It was a team that was stacked with future pros
08:02 who've made their ways.
08:04 Mikaela Meyer, Marissa Shields.
08:07 You see Vargas, Shakur, Stephenson, Gary Russell,
08:10 Carlos Barreiro, Zico Hernandez,
08:11 Charles Conwell, a team that went to Rio.
08:16 So you see Shakur made the name.
08:18 Of course, Marissa's made the name.
08:19 Mikaela's made the name.
08:20 Now Vargas trying to make his name
08:22 in the upper echelon of boxing.
08:25 Third round of action.
08:34 Beto Duran, former world champion,
08:36 Pauly Malinagy, and Claudia Trejo's with you
08:39 here on CBS Sports.
08:42 You kept saying, Pauly,
08:43 he's making it too difficult for himself.
08:45 So what do you want to see in the third to change it up?
08:47 - I'd just like to see him fight at a little bit more range.
08:49 Like, this range right here,
08:50 if he's effective right here and using that jab,
08:54 being a little bit more busy with that jab,
08:56 as opposed to letting Pedroza-Portillo get off first
08:58 or even exchanging with him, you know.
09:00 'Cause I think Pedroza-Portillo getting off these shots.
09:02 You see Vargas, when he gets them off, he's more accurate.
09:04 He's the sharper guy, so even if you fight like this,
09:06 you're gonna end up probably winning the round.
09:08 You're more accurate, you're more--
09:09 you're the better sharpshooter,
09:10 but you're making the fight a little bit more difficult.
09:12 You're allowing Pedroza-Portillo to be confident,
09:15 and I don't know if there was a clash of heads there,
09:17 but that was a punch.
09:18 Oh, good hook again.
09:19 - Portillo's bleeding.
09:22 He's eating some punches here in the third round.
09:27 Hook from Vargas.
09:29 Solid round for Vargas.
09:30 He's listening to the advice of Pauly Malinagy,
09:32 giving himself that space, room to work with.
09:35 - You heard him being very precise
09:37 with the punches that he throws.
09:39 He creates the space, like you said,
09:41 staying in the mid-range and walking in with no problem.
09:45 - Now he starts to smell the blood,
09:47 and he's getting a little bit more aggressive.
09:49 - Blood on Vargas' front portillo.
09:52 Bleeding, gushing from the left eyebrow.
09:55 That is a nasty cut. - Oh, yeah.
09:58 - What's impressive on the part of Vargas
09:59 is his concentration at that close range
10:02 of flying both directions.
10:03 - You see the knot on the left side of Vargas.
10:06 That's from the head butt.
10:07 So he's got a big knot. - Yeah.
10:09 - Portillo's cut.
10:10 - That's a dangerous one, too,
10:11 'cause that's when those get out of hand themselves.

10:17 Cornermen are gonna be quick.

10:35 That's a--that's a huge cut that he's got.
10:38 - And it's not in a good place. - Right into his eye.
10:41 - You see how--how Vargas, when he's on,
10:43 he can thread the needle.

10:46 and step back in range.
10:47 - And they're gonna stop it here,
10:48 probably, to check it out.
10:49 Remember, it's under 4 rounds.

10:55 even on Vargas' forehead,
10:56 on the left side of his forehead.

11:18 - Portillo's not complaining about it.
11:20 Hey, you're Tijuana. You're not complaining.
11:22 Right now, Vargas needs to take advantage of this.
11:24 - Claudia's gonna go check out that corner

11:32 He's starting to wing his punches.
11:34 [crowd shouting]

18:20 Vargas was coming in, and you see the corner, Maelo telling the referee,
18:24 like, "My guy can't see."
18:26 So they complete three rounds.
18:31 And they were talking, making sure he said, "You got to come out.
18:33 I'm going to give you another round."
18:35 That's what the referee would say, "I'm going to give you another round."
18:37 And then the doctor came in, and when the doctor came in,
18:40 you see the doctor waving in the corner.
18:42 The doctor's the one who said, "No, we're not going to continue this fight."
18:47 So the cut from Portillo will definitely get some stitches administered
18:51 as soon as they leave the ring, but it was a good back-and-forth action,
18:56 and it was going to be a good one in the phantom weight division
18:59 in our main event.
19:01 Mark Frato is our ring announcer.
19:03 Mark Frato is going to let us know what happened.
19:07 The doctor at ringside informed the referee in charge,
19:09 Celis Asimeneos, to call a halt for this contest.
19:13 The end of the fight comes at the end of the third round.
19:16 According to Florida State Athletic Commission rules,
19:19 because the fight in a 10-rounder did not reach the fourth round,
19:23 the result of this contest is a no decision.
19:28 Accidental headbutt before the fourth round.
19:31 Doctor stops it.
19:33 No decision here in Florida.
19:36 Yeah, so a no decision per Florida rules.
19:40 It did not go four rounds.
19:42 It completed three.
19:44 So a no decision for this one.
19:48 But, Paul, you're right.
19:50 You're talking about the hematoma on the left side of Antonio Vargas.
19:53 Yeah, those are in a dangerous area.
19:55 I've seen those grow rapidly as well.
19:57 If this fight would have went continued, it could have got complicated as well.
