00:13 There, you see her
00:16 Sitting there across the way
00:19 These songs feel like they've always been there.
00:21 You might not have listened to it in 30 years
00:23 and the second you hear the first notes of it
00:25 you know the whole song.
00:26 And you don't know why
00:28 but you're dying to try
00:30 you wanna kiss the girl
00:32 The Little Mermaid songs are so timeless.
00:36 We lost Howard Ashman, the original lyricist,
00:38 who's a genius.
00:39 So my great hope with this film was to expand the movie,
00:42 honor Howard's work,
00:43 and tell the story in a bigger way.
00:45 And the antidote was Ellen Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
00:48 They're both great collaborators.
00:50 Little Mermaid was kind of the gem of them all.
00:53 It was what Howard and I created.
00:55 And so it's really exciting working with Lin.
00:58 He's fearless.
00:59 These songs are sacred texts to me.
01:02 It's probably as responsible for me falling in love with musical storytelling
01:05 as anything in my life.
01:06 Look at this stuff.
01:08 Isn't it neat?
01:10 Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
01:13 Howard Ashman set this incredible standard as a lyricist.
01:17 I think Part of Your World is one of the great character songs of all time.
01:21 It is both this soaring ballad
01:23 and it is utterly conversational.
01:25 Up where they walk
01:27 Up where they run
01:28 With Halle Bailey singing,
01:30 this just fills my heart.
01:32 When she sang Part of Your World,
01:34 it was so moving to me.
01:35 She does it with such depth and such passion.
01:37 It actually takes on a new life.
01:39 I remember thinking to myself,
01:43 "This is a really cool moment."
01:45 I'm just going to take a picture in my head
01:47 and remember this forever.
01:48 When people see Melissa as Ursula,
01:53 I'm telling you, it's like something you've never seen before.
01:55 She is so good.
01:56 Her Ursula is...
01:57 I mean, to have Alan Menken
01:59 and to have Lin-Manuel Miranda
02:01 and then, oh, they're working together.
02:03 It's kind of crazy.
02:04 I was really happy to get the chance to write lyrics.
