00:20 That was us doing a France 24 version of the Wes Anderson TikTok trend today at the Cannes
00:37 Film Festival, a filmmaker with a very recognizable cinematic style.
00:41 Wes Anderson's Asteroid City with its all-star cast including Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson,
00:51 Edward Norton and many more. It's his third film to be presented here at the festival
00:56 after Moonrise Kingdom and The French Dispatch.
00:59 [MUSIC]
01:14 There's not much of a delineation between the work and
01:17 the free time and Wes creates this very familial ensemble.
01:23 [MUSIC]
01:29 Among the all-star cast are Maya Hawke, best known for her role in the TV series Stranger Things,
01:35 and her famous parents Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke and Homeland's Rupert Friend.
01:40 [MUSIC]
01:44 Earlier I chatted to them about working on a Wes Anderson movie which they say
01:49 is every actor's dream.
01:50 You're not here.
01:52 We're not there.
01:53 The car exploded.
01:54 Come get the girls. I have to stay here with Woodrow.
01:58 I'm not the chauffeur. I'm the grandfather.
02:00 Where are you?
02:01 Asteroid City, Farmer 6, mile 75.
02:04 Rupert Friend plays Montana, a cowboy wandering the deserts with his musical compatriots
02:11 who has a knack for modesty and a kind of old-timey gentleness.
02:18 Maya Hawke plays June who is a very competent school teacher
02:23 who is stranded in Asteroid City with her charges which is a busload of small people.
02:29 Some of our information about outer space may no longer be completely accurate.
02:32 Anyway, there's still only nine planets in the solar system as far as we know, Billy.
02:36 Except now there's an alien.
02:37 [MUSIC]
02:40 How would you pitch the film to people at home?
02:42 Classic latest Wes Anderson.
02:47 A must-see story by people who love making, telling stories.
02:53 Now, Rupert, you've also worked with Wes Anderson and the French Dispatch.
02:57 What's it like being part of his acting troupe?
02:59 It's a cliche but it's like being in a huge extended family.
03:04 You know, he takes care of the experience from soup to nuts.
03:10 As in where we stay, we all eat together every night.
03:16 There's an incredible feeling of company about it
03:20 aside from the fact that he is a gorgeous human being and a pleasure to spend time with.
03:24 Asteroid City is one of your first acting roles since Stranger Things.
03:28 It's a funny question. I'm like still doing Stranger Things.
03:30 And you've also released your second album.
03:32 Yes.
03:33 Why were you attracted by Asteroid City?
03:35 I've always wanted to work with Wes.
03:37 There are a few people in our industry who can do world building for art's sake.
03:43 You know, there's a lot of art films that are kind of small budget and small casts
03:48 and, you know, the shoestrings world that are amazing and wonderful.
03:51 And then there's kind of big, big budget things like Stranger Things, you know.
03:55 But to get to be in an art film where it can have a giant ensemble
04:00 full of the greatest actors, you know, working today and these big beautiful sets,
04:04 it's a once in a lifetime experience in and of itself.
04:07 And there are only ever probably a couple people alive
04:10 who can build that kind of environment.
04:13 And then even then outside of that,
04:16 there is no one working today who makes movies like Wes.
04:20 What's the Cannes experience like for you
04:21 being part of this amazing team presenting this film here?
04:25 Well, it's my first time at the festival.
04:27 Mine too.
04:28 Yeah, it feels like a pretty cool way to sort of take that cherry
04:32 with this cast who, as I say, have all become friends as well.
04:38 And then, Rupert, you're part of Wes Anderson's TV series as well,
04:41 The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
04:42 What can you tell us about that?
04:43 It's four of Roald Dahl's adult stories,
04:49 the sort of dark, twisted side of Roald Dahl,
04:51 which Wes has then put his very unique spin on.
04:57 And I'm very excited about them because he's been inspired by those kind of 70s,
05:04 actually British, kind of filmed plays.
05:07 So they have a literal theatrical quality to them.
05:11 And again, we all rotate parts.
05:14 So there's a, I think there's six actors,
05:17 but everyone plays more than one part.
05:19 And Maya, you do have like a real cult following after Stranger Things.
05:23 And I was wondering, do you have a message for your fans out there?
05:26 It's been a wonderful thing in my life
05:28 to have so many young people be interested in me.
05:31 Young people are amazing.
05:34 They're curious and excited and inspired.
05:37 And they have so much power to decide what art is important
05:43 and what way our culture is going to go and bend.
05:46 And it's so inspiring to me to get to have these conversations with them
05:50 and interact with them and feel on a journey with them.
05:54 Now I feel like a part of a team and a community.
05:57 Some people are very young and they might go see this movie
05:59 because they might see it on my Instagram or something.
06:03 And then they can go and watch all of his films
06:06 and then it can change his life and he can become their favourite director.
06:08 You know, there are things young people are so exciting.
06:11 Sometimes I think I feel more at home outside the Earth's atmosphere.
06:15 Oh, wow.
06:15 Me too.
06:17 They're strange, aren't they?
06:18 They're children compared to normal people.
06:22 Yes, that's correct.
06:23 It's true.
06:23 The actress Margot Robbie is one of the numerous names to play in Asteroid City.
06:31 [Music]
06:33 She was last here in Cannes with Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
06:39 Time now for our Cannes close-up.
06:40 [Music]
06:42 No, you promised me.
06:53 You promised me.
06:56 [Music]
06:58 The papaya to wear in panties.
07:00 [Music]
07:02 I'm Sharon Tate.
07:25 I'm in the movie.
07:26 You're in this?
07:27 That's me.
07:28 I play Miss Carlson, the klutz.
07:29 I kind of applied to myself to the character in that respect
07:33 and in doing so I felt like I could honour the memory of real life Sharon Tate
07:37 who so many people said was such a bright light in this world.
07:41 Never did this.
07:42 [Music]
07:55 Now even though the Cannes Film Festival is an industry event,
07:59 there is a way for members of the public to get involved and see some movies.
08:03 The Cinema de la Plage or the cinema on the beach is open to everyone
08:07 as René Lefort and Nick Rushworth report.
08:09 Sun lovers.
08:14 I'm from Cannes and love sunbathing on the beach.
08:18 [Music]
08:24 Artists.
08:25 I've come to the beach cinema to make little sketches of people I saw today in Cannes.
08:30 And beach footballers.
08:32 I play a little football.
08:35 We do it in teams of three and draw the pitch.
08:37 We know we won't get any injuries here.
08:40 There's no worries.
08:41 The beach is also a go-to place for movie lovers.
08:45 It's right near the top hotels along the Cannes seafront, the Croisette.
08:48 The fact that they've put a screen on a beach in this incredible setting
08:54 is just a dream.
08:54 It's also a refuge for those missing out on a seat for the latest Indiana Jones.
09:01 I lined up at 11 o'clock and the film was at 7 and I didn't get in.
09:09 But Harrison Ford smiled at me so I'm fine about it.
09:12 People at the beach cinema can see American classics such as Terrence Malick's Badlands.
09:19 My girl Holly and I decided to kill ourselves.
09:22 Same way I did her dad.
09:23 They did everything so well with the chairs are beautiful.
09:28 The setup is really nice.
09:29 They gave us these cute pink blankets.
09:31 So we're really happy that we get to participate in it.
09:34 And they can see world premieres as well.
09:37 We've organized the beach cinema for a little more than 20 years.
09:46 People rush to line up along the beach.
09:48 They spend at least one evening if not two here.
09:51 Some people even come here every night.
09:53 Tonight's movie is a comedy called C'est la Vie.
09:58 In it Jean-Pierre Bacri plays an event organizer at the end of his tether,
10:02 Disasters ensue.
10:15 Well the glamour of the festival is also all about the parties.
10:20 We'll leave you with a taste of Canne by Night with a special performance from Grammy award-winning
10:25 Nigerian star Burnaboy just days after he sold out performance to a crowd of 40,000 in Paris.
10:31 Thanks for watching.
10:33 See you tomorrow.
10:35 Hands up!
10:36 Hands up!
10:37 Hands up!
10:38 Let's shake up the world!
10:40 Come on, everybody!
10:41 I don't want nobody to be my matagele.
10:45 For this life I lay, I want to be celebrated.
10:50 Don't wanna waste my days, I want to spend every moment joyfully.
10:54 I spent too long,
