Elusive ‘13-15ft’ prehistoric fish caught by anglers off Florida coast

Ecstatic fishermen couldn’t contain their excitement as they reeled in a huge marine creature they later discovered to be a critically-endangered sawfish.

Dan D’alessio and AJ Rotondella estimated their catch to be a “700-800lbs” and “13- 15ft-long” fish.

The fishermen hooked the rare specimen in Treasure Coast, Florida, on 4 April.

All types of sawfish are categorised as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

Some can grow up to 25ft (7.6 metres) long.
