JAWS is considered to be one of the most iconic movies of all time, yet many people don’t know the story behind it’s making in 1975. The epic film was created under seemingly impossible conditions, with the makers having to contend with numerous production difficulties and its own stars having reservations about the film.

Like its biggest fan, Steven Spielberg, many studio executives weren’t sure about adapting Peter Benchley’s best-selling novel into a film for the big screen. But when producer Richard D. Zanuck called Spielberg in August of 1974 to have him direct the movie, Spielberg was naturally eager to jump in.

The production was riddled with problems from the outset. The movie was being produced on sea, with all its sets, crew and actors having to endure the huge challenge of shooting at sea. The effects crew had to come up with incredibly complicated ways of creating the 25-foot mechanical shark that would be terrorizing the cast. To top it off, the second half of the script was incomplete when production began, forcing Spielberg and the cast to work with what they had.
