The architect of a key safeguard to shield Australia's banking system from the impact of rising interest rates says removing the stress test for home loan borrowers was a mistake. The test meant lenders assessed borrowers' ability to make repayments against a minimum of 7.25 per cent interest, ensuring that they were not caught out when those rates rose.
