Nick La Rocca (April 11, 1889 - Feb 22, 1961) was from New Orleans. He was the organizer-leader, central figure in pioneer jazz group, Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Composer of important jazz numbers that became standards. Beginning about 1905 played locally in combos and led band. Many jobs with Papa Laine 1912-16. On job in Chicago organized Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Charter members were Larry Shields (cl), Eddie Edwards (tb), Henry Ragas (p), Tony Sbarbaro (d) who later changed his name to Spargo. The group began Chicago engagement mid-1916, acquired cohesion and balance, attracted devoted fans. Big hit at Reisenweber's in New York early 1917, made famous early jazz recordings. In England April 1919 to mid-1920, recorded there. Resumed in New York spots, broke up early 1925. La Rocca returned to New Orleans, in obscurity many years. Emerged 1936 with 14-piece swing band starring clarinetist Larry Shields. Band moderately successful, later reduced in size, broke up early 1938. La Rocca returned to New Orleans, almost out of music business. Compositions include Fidgety Feet, Original Dixieland One-Step, Sensation rag, Skeleton Jangle, Lazy Daddy, Ostrich Walk and Livery Stable Blues.
