Was There a Medieval Colony of New England?

  • last year
The Norman Invasion of England in 1066 by William the Conqueror didn’t end with everyone laying down and submitting to the new order. Like many invasions, this one produced a wave of refugees. According to an Icelandic saga and an account written by an English monk two centuries later, the English rebels realized that the Danish King would no longer help them fight the Norman invaders. With no hope of winning, they fled England for Constantinople, where they eventually gained territory along the Black Sea. There, it is said that they founded the medieval colony of New England.
