Hauer-King's revelation about Eric's sense of adventure shows that his journey in the film will be parallel to Ariel's. Instead of wanting to explore land like her, though, Eric will be drawn to the sea, having the same influence of exploring a world he has yet to understand. This will allow him and Ariel to connect through their shared wish to explore parts of the world they aren't familiar with yet.

Eric's wish to explore the ocean also gives his character more depth beyond acting as Ariel's love interest. By portraying Eric as someone who wants to see unfamiliar parts of the world just as much as Ariel, it opens the door for their love story to be entwined with their different yet similar dreams. It's also possible that Eric will learn more about Ariel's world and want to visit, with Ariel trying to stop him because of her escape to land.
