After meeting Katie, I cannot stop thinking about what a beautiful mature young woman she is and how cruel our world is that she is sleeping outside homeless!
It was down to 42°f last night in Winnipeg. With the wind, I am sure it felt much colder. Katie said she didn't sleep much. She mostly walked around to stay warm.
As a result of a few bad situations and flawed relationships, Katie has been living on the streets since last March. I can't even imagine what life is like for this young homeless woman. Yet Katie looks at life through a positive lens.
The good news is Katie was in the right place at the right time. She was walking by the convention center where this year's Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness Conference is being set up. Someone who works with local homeless people in Winnipeg saw Katie outside in the cold and invited her in for a cup of coffee and a sandwich. Katie was introduced to people that can help get her the support she needs.
I cannot help but feel her sadness.
Kindly follow/help to help us help others in need.
