Far Side Solar Flare Was So Extreme It Smashed Into Earth as We Orbited Around

  • last year
Our Sun is approaching its 11-year solar maximum and this week it showed off exactly what we can expect as the center of our solar system begins to act out. On March 12th the Sun released a coronal mass ejection, one of the strongest on the scale and the amount of solar debris it kicked off into space was massive. According to NASA, the ejecta traveled away from the Sun at 1,321 miles per second. And despite occurring on the far side of the Sun something else happened, the ejection was so wide, Earth ended up ramming through the shockwave shortly after. Veuer’s Tony Spitz has the details.
