00:00 6km to the top of the mountain as Vengagard has to free wheel into the hairpin.
00:06 Such is the speed that he's got.
00:07 Jumps out, starts to make a few legs hurt.
00:19 On to stage 7 of Paris-Nice and time for the riders to return to action after an unexpected
00:24 day off yesterday.
00:26 Stage 6 was cancelled due to exceptionally strong winds.
00:31 Today it's all about the GC battle as we head up the Col de la Couillole, the race's big
00:36 summit finish.
00:37 Race leader Tadej Pogacar has a typically Pogacar-like plan of attack.
00:45 The goal is to come to the finish line as quick as possible and try to win the stage.
00:51 I want a hard race because I feel good and I think the last climb is quite long.
00:58 It should suit Godou and Vengagard more than me but I think I can be confident and try
01:06 to go for the stage.
01:08 His closest challenger is David Godou at just 6 seconds.
01:12 Jonas Vengagard is 46 seconds off the pace in third.
01:15 We're not going to go and beat him because if we do he's already had a ball in the
01:22 kicker.
01:23 We know he's very strong and he's probably one of the top three riders in the world.
01:26 We saw that Vengagard managed to take him out of the Tour de France.
01:29 We have to stay here.
01:30 I'm not saying I'm going to be able to take him out of the Tour but if we can try, we'll
01:36 try.
01:37 But after that it's Pogacar and he's a world champion so we have to get a win.
01:44 Today is very different than last year in the Tour and we'll just have to see how I
01:51 feel in the end and I'll do everything I can to try to win the stage.
01:58 To be honest I feel like I've had OK legs so hopefully again today.
02:06 We'll just see by the end of the day how everything is and I'm looking forward to it.
02:14 Sunday stage starts in Nice which also hosts Sunday's short but spectacular finale.
02:19 There are 143km on the menu with a warm-up on the long climb of the Cote du Tourette
02:24 Chateau, almost 18km at 4.6%.
02:29 It's then on to the main event, La Couiolle, 15.7km at 7.1% which could well settle the
02:35 overall outcome of this 81st edition.
02:47 Nineteen riders got into the day's breakaway, though they were down to 18 when Ineos teenager
02:52 Josh Tarling, the race's youngest rider, unfortunately crashed out.
02:57 Among the escapees were former Paris-Nice stage winners Saren Croix-Andersen and David
03:00 de la Cruz, plus riders we've already seen in the breakaway this week, Hugo Hall, Lilian
03:05 Calmagin, Larry Warbas and Pascal Enkorn.
03:08 Other big names including Niels Pollitz, Gregor Mühlberger and Remy Cavagna, the highest
03:13 placed on GC.
03:14 However, UAE Team Emirates had absolutely no intention of giving them a big gap, keeping
03:20 it steady for Pagaca at just under three minutes.
03:24 The riders blasting along at an average of over 40km/h with the help of a tailwind.
03:29 Astana then looked to up the pace in the breakaway with de la Cruz and Javier Romo hitting the
03:34 front as they came through the intermediate sprints.
03:37 Kobe Gossen's also getting involved.
03:41 Ineos had taken it up in the peloton meanwhile, thinning out the main group and perhaps lining
03:46 something up for Dani Martinez or Pavel Sivakov.
03:50 Heading towards the final climb, the break was down to just five riders.
03:54 Gossen's, Romo, Pollitz, Enkorn and Jeremy Cabot.
03:58 The peloton still one minute and thirty back as they hit the lower slopes.
04:20 The Col de la Couillole featuring on Paris-Nice for the second time after 2017.
04:24 Gossen's going solo as the peloton began to hoover up the rest of the breakaway.
04:30 Tobias Voss, the world time trial champion, doing a fantastic job on the front for Wingergaard.
04:35 The pace turned out to be too much for Martinez.
04:38 He was dropped in spite of all that earlier work from Ineos.
04:43 Further up the road, Gossen's was joined by Romo.
04:46 But the breakaway would come to an end with nine kilometres still to climb.
04:52 The favourites preparing to face off as Voss eventually handed over to Wingergaard, the
04:56 down soon countering a move from Chris Harper.
05:01 Six kilometres to the top of the mountain as Wingergaard has to freewheel into the hairpin.
05:07 Such is the speed that he's got.
05:09 Jumps out, starts to make a few legs hurt.
05:14 But anything you can do, I can do better, said Pogacar.
05:18 And off he went.
05:22 The yellow jersey hitting them hard, but not quite taking off into the sunset.
05:28 The others chasing, getting organised and Godo and Wingergaard had the strength to fight
05:32 their way back to his wheel.
05:38 The Frenchman then made his move and it proved to be too much for Wingergaard.
05:44 The down dropping back as the top two overall opened up a gap.
05:47 Yates, Bardet, Maeder and Paulus were fighting hard, but they wouldn't see the front of the
05:51 race again.
05:52 Wingergaard did though, showing great tenacity to catch Pogacar and Godo just inside the
05:58 final kilometre.
05:59 The overall podium looking settled, but who would win the stage?
06:03 Pogacar now races away in this stage of Paris-Nice.
06:09 Stage seven and Pogacar looks around.
06:13 He's going to fly his way to the finish at the line.
06:17 Two for Taddei, he wins stage seven.
06:28 It was an almighty battle on that final climb, but once again Pogacar showed he's the boss,
06:33 taking his second win of the week on a summit finish and moving on to 53 career victories.
06:38 The Slovenian is on course to win Paris-Nice at the first time of asking and he'll be in
06:42 familiar territory tomorrow on his training roads.
06:46 The 24-year-old could theoretically go home with all four distinctive jerseys.
06:51 I think the first really hot day this year and we were racing really full gas from the
06:57 start and Ineos did a big effort in the middle of the stage and it was coming to the final
07:06 climb.
07:07 I think everyone was already a bit dead and for sure today was one of the toughest battles
07:14 between for the finish.
07:18 The top four on the stage, also the top four overall.
07:21 Paulus taking an impressive fifth place to climb up the leaderboard, followed by Maeda,
07:26 Bardet, Sivakov, Jorgensen and Latour.
07:30 Pogacar taking his seventh win of the season, increasing his lead to 12 seconds over Godoux,
07:36 then Gagarin almost a minute back with Yates slipping to 1.27.
07:39 Paulus jumps from ninth up to sixth.
07:43 Mats Pedersen abandoned the race today with illness, but even if he'd still been around
07:47 the Dan would have lost his green jersey to Pogacar.
07:50 He looks to have it sewn up, leading Olaf Koi by 12 points.
07:56 Jonas Gregar still has the polka dot jersey, but his lead has been cut to just eight points
08:01 now with a maximum of 35 up for grabs on Sunday.
08:05 Pogacar could yet complete the full house.
08:12 He also leads the youth classification by two minutes 32 from Jorgensen, with Kevin
08:16 Vaucoulin also crashing today and losing around five minutes.
08:21 Tomorrow the race concludes with the traditional romp around Nice, which is always fast and
08:25 furious.
08:27 Five climbs packed into just 118 kilometres, including the iconic Col d'Aize, before a
08:32 sweep down to the finish line on the Promenade des Anglais.
08:35 Do join us again tomorrow to see how it all shakes out and thanks for watching.
