Nearly four years later, his ashes are due to be launched into space, with his widow Claire Mercer saying he is ready to 'rest with the stars'.
Since his death, Claire has dedicated her life to campaigning for an end to smart motorways, on which there is no hard shoulder. She says that now most people know what a smart motorway is, they hate them, and she will not stop fighting until they are axed.
