Der 14-jährige Pio ist in einer Roma-Familiengemeinschaft aufgewachsen, die mehrere Wohnblocks einer italienischen Stadt bewohnt. Perspektiven gibt es dort nicht, dafür umso mehr Zusammenhalt untereinander. Pios großes Idol ist sein älterer Bruder Cosimo, dem er auf Schritt und Tritt folgt. Als Cosimo und sein Vater im Knast landen, ist es auf einmal an Pio, für sich und seine Familie zu sorgen. Er beginnt, kleinere und größere Verbrechen zu begehen und seine Diebstahlbeute zu Geld zu machen - ein schlechtes Gewissen hat er dabei nicht, für ihn scheint dies der ganz normale Weg zu sein, eine Familie zu ernähren. Begleitet wird er bei seinen Raubzügen von Ayiva, einem Flüchtling aus Burkina Faso, mit dem er sich langsam anfreundet.
