Young American couple Tom and Anna Reed (James Franco and Kate Hudson) fall into severe debt while renovating Anna's family home in London. As the couple faces the loss of their dream to have a house and start a family, they discover that the tenant in the apartment below them has been murdered and he left behind a stash of cash—$400,000 worth. Though initially hesitant, Tom and Anna decide that the plan is simple: all they have to do is quietly take the money and use only what's necessary to get them out of debt. But when they start spending the money and can't seem to stop, they find themselves the target of a deadly adversary—the thief who stole it—and that's when very bad things start happening to good people.

Tom und Anna Reed planen einen Neustart und ziehen von den USA nach London in das alte Haus von Annas Familie. Aber durch hohe finanzielle Ausgaben für die Renovierung des neuen Familienhauses steht das Ehepaar ziemlich schnell ohne Geld in der Tasche, dafür mit einem großen Berg Schulden da. Als der unter ihnen wohnende Mieter völlig überraschend verstirbt und die Reeds in der Wohnung des Toten eine große Summe Bargeld finden, sieht das Ehepaar darin einen Wink des Schicksals. Tom und Anna entschließen sich, das Geld an sich zu nehmen und nichts der Polizei zu sagen. Um nicht aufzufallen, wollen sie zunächst nur so viel ausgeben, dass sie ihr Haus in Schuss halten können. Doch schnell wir klar, dass noch jemand anderes, jemand gefährliches von dem Geld wusste…
