Mit den in ihre Obhut gegebenen Kindern unternahm sie Streifzüge auch in die Teile der Stadt, in der die weniger Privilegierten lebten. Zahlreiche Fotos zeigen Menschen in einem zufälligen, aber höchst berührenden Moment. Neben der überwältigenden Anzahl von Fotos, die der Regisseur John Maloof zufällig bei einer Versteigerung entdeckte, hinterließ Vivian Maier ihre Filme und eine große Anzahl an Zeitungsausschnitten.
