Germany 1772 -- the young, dashing Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Alexander Fehling) aspires to be a poet, but, after failing his law exams, is sent by his father (Henry Huebchen) to a provincial court to mend his ways. Unsure of his talent and eager to prove himself, Goethe soon wins the praise and friendship of his superior, Kestner (Moritz Bleibtreu). Goethe soon falls madly in love with the pretty and free-spirited Lotte (Miriam Stein,) but their secret love affair is compromised as the young lovers are unaware that Lotte's father has already promised her hand to another man...Director Phillip Stölzl returns to the very wellspring of Romanticism -- Goethe's loosely autobiographical masterpiece "The Sorrows of Young Werther"-- and conjures up a beguiling and refreshingly innocent period romantic drama.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ist durchs Jura-Examen gefallen und wird zur Strafe vom Papa zum Reichskammergericht in die Provinz geschickt, wo er für Gerichtsrat Kestner Akten wälzen muss. In seiner Freizeit zieht der Freund von Wein, Weib und Gesang mit seinem Referendarskollegen um die Häuser bzw. auf die Märkte und wirft alsbald ein Auge auf die hübsche Lotte aus armen Verhältnissen, die leider seinem Vorgesetzten versprochen ist. Das große Herzeleid führt zu seinem ersten künstlerischen Erfolg "Die Leiden des jungen Werther".
