There have been several studies suggesting the presence of liquid water beneath the south polar ice cap of Mars. In 2018, scientists using radar data from the Mars Express spacecraft found a large lake of liquid water beneath the ice cap. In 2020, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter also detected signs of liquid water beneath the ice cap. These findings support the idea that there may be subsurface water on Mars, which could potentially support life. However, more research is needed to confirm the presence of liquid water and to understand the conditions that allow it to exist.
