Set The Speed At : 0.5 X
The debut album (released under the name "Clout" in some countries) of a girl group from Benoni (Gauteng Province), active in 1977-1981. The band's debut single "Since You've Been Gone" was released in 1977 and was a cover version of a Russ Ballard song he wrote in 1976 for his solo album Winning. Because the song was a hit in its original form and other covers of the song were released around the same time as "Clout", the single was not a success. Their first hit "Substitute" was a cover of the Righteous Brothers. Interestingly, when recording this piece, the girls only sang, and all instrumental parts were played by musicians from the Circus group, who were hired specifically for this purpose. This fact was hidden for a long time and became known only after the collapse of Clout. The single "Substitute" was released in November 1977, and in June 1978 took 2nd place in the UK charts, which it held for 3 weeks. In New Zealand, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, South Africa, the song "Substitute" was #1, in Holland - #2, in France - #5, in Austria - #10, in Sweden - #13. The single hit the US charts in September 1978 and within a week took 67th (according to some reports 61st) place, holding out on the charts for a total of 10 weeks. The debut single sold 600,000 copies in the UK, 400,000 in France, 100,000 in the Netherlands and 60,000 in Belgium. During 1978, the singles "Let It Grow" and "You've Got All Of Me" (#25 in Austria, #17 in the Netherlands) were released, which were moderately popular in mainland Europe but went unnoticed in the UK and the US. In 1981, Clout ceased to exist. The band members came into conflict with their producer, as he took most of the royalties received for himself. “We didn't read the contract carefully and didn't get what we expected,” Cindi Alter said in an interview. “It was like a puppet theater where the puppeteer gets all the money and the puppets are put away in a drawer after the show is over.”
