"Talk to me Goose..." A British company is letting film fans slip into the cockpit of a Top Gun movie. Cambridgeshire-based Fighter Jet Simulators allow you to experience ultra-realistic recreations of the recent Top Gun: Maverick blockbuster. The firm, based on an airfield, puts the wannabe pilot in the seat of a F-35 Lightning II and lets them carry out training before attempting to pull off the final mission from the film. Using state of the art 200 degree projectors and realistic cockpit controls, visitors experience what it’s like to fly a modern jet fighter. The team use state-of-the-art simulation software and painstakingly coded the scenes themselves. Adam Clements, of Fighter Jet Simulators, explains: "The missions needed careful programming by ourselves. You can’t buy them. "The simulators are running on Lockheed Martin’s professional Flight Simulator Software: that’s how we’re able to recreate the F-35 so realistically - it's the same software the RAF are using. But all the missions are coded into the software manually." The team recreated the experience to be as realistic as possible, while still following the film's story. Two missions were developed: Sidewinder and Dagger 1. Matt Vann, Fighter Jet Simulators’ Chief Instructor explains; “First we do the training mission. After taking off from the US navy training school in Nevada, you thread your way through the canyons and valleys before “popping” up and striking down on the dummy target. Just watch out for those SAM missiles. “Following a short debrief, it’s time for the main mission. You start from the USS America - location: Top Secret. Having taken off from the aircraft carrier, you head towards the coast and insert into enemy territory, staying low to avoid the multiple SAM sites. Once the target is destroyed, you’ll need to fight your way back to the carrier and attempt a landing. Let’s hope you make it that far." Fighter Jet Simulator was created to offer realistic simulator experiences in the latest fighter jet utilised by the RAF’s - the F-35b Lightning II. All aspects of the fighter jet have been carefully re-created to allow anyone to fly and fight the aircraft as if they were in the real thing. With speeds of up to Mach 1.5 and armed with air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, customers can immerse themselves in the world of a modern combat fighter pilot. Two identical simulators means they can be connected into the same environment, so you can dog fight with your friend or simply join forces to eliminate the enemy together on joint strike missions.
