THIS is the awkward moment an athlete had to cover his manhood after it slipped out of his shorts while riding like a commando and then came LAST.

Fortunately, the Italian athlete was able to laugh at the hilarious moment that was broadcast live on television.

Decathlete Alberto Nonino started the 400m race at this year's World Under-20 Championships in Athletics in Colombia beating two rivals.

By the time he reached the final straight, he slowed down quite noticeably and was seen tucking his baggy shorts at least six times as competitors passed him and he ended up at the back of the pack.

The troubles of the 18-year-old below were immediately mentioned as the reason for his slowdown.

Sports journalist David Sánchez de Castro left nothing to the imagination when revealing in a tweet along with images of Nonino's embarrassing moment: “U-20 World Athletics Championship in Cali, Colombia.

“Last series of the 400 meter decathlon. The Italian Alberto Nonino on lane five starts very well but crosses the finish line last.

"I had the **** out, literally."

In a follow-up tweet, Sánchez wrote: "Maybe I have explained myself wrong.

"His penis slipped out the side of his shorts and he had to hold it because it wouldn't allow him to run properly, which is normal when his dongle swings back and forth."

The Spanish-speaking press blamed Nonino's slow 51.57-second run on his opting to run without his underpants.

The promising young runner was able to ignore the embarrassing clip, which had gone viral.

He said in an Instagram story: "I just want to talk to you guys a little bit about the buzz that's been on blogs and social media in general.

"I am aware that it was obviously an accident and I would like to tell you that I am aware of the reaction and that you do not need to send me the links to the blogs that exist.

"I'm trying to laugh about it now but immediately afterwards I felt terrible and I'm grateful to my friends and family for getting me through what happened a few hours later."

Spanish newspaper La Razón said of the Italian's misstep: "This race will at least serve as a lesson for future events.

"It's best to wear pants and wear the right shorts for long-distance events."
