While racing to the hospital to see his daughter Xixi, who has leukemia and whose condition has suddenly deteriorated, Hong Kong Special Agent Lin Dong is informed by his colleague Susan that Dr. James, an important witness in a case they are following, is in mortal danger. Lin stops outside the hospital, and after a moment's hesitation, he sets off to meet up with Susan and their unit.
Before the unit arrives, Dr. James - who is carrying an artificial heart - injects himself with a mysterious substance. As the unit escorts him away, they are ambushed by a squad of men wearing exotic black armor and wielding high-tech weaponry, led by a monstrous-looking man named Andre, who slaughters most of the unit and seriously injures Lin Dong and Susan. Before Andre can capture Dr. James, the target of the ambush, Lin Dong pins him against an oil tank using his car. As Andre recovers from the impact, Lin shoots the oil tank, causing a massive explosion. As Lin lies critically injured, he receives a phone call answered by Dr. James: Xixi has died in the hospital. However, both Lin Dong and Andre survived, although Andre's injuries have transformed him into a cyborg. Thirteen years later in Sydney, Australia, writer Rick Rogers has just published a book called Hero of Steel about a U.S. Marine who has been implanted with an artificial heart.
