Herman was a German immigrant better known as Harry Powers amongst other pseudonyms. Like many seeking to leave rural America, he enlisted in the US Army and served in WWI before becoming an oil stock promoter, which led him to con jobs. Soon, he found the most lucrative con of all: love.
