The Asian Football Confederation's Asian Cup (AFC Asian Cup, or simply the Asian Cup) is a football tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The Asian champions were the winners, and they qualified for the FIFA Confederations Cup right away.

From 1956 through 2004, the Asian Cup was held every four years. The AFC ultimately decided to alter the cycle of holding these events to a quieter year after the Summer Olympics and European Football Championship were staged in the same year as the Asian Cup (2004, 2008, 2012, etc.). After 2004, the Asian Cup was contested in 2007 or three years later, and then every four years after that (2011, 2015, 2019, etc.).
