Wenn man es nicht besser wüsste, könnte man das Verhalten des somalischen Wildesels anfangs für aggressiv halten. Die Stute hat beide Ohren zurückgelegt. Das könnte auch bedeuten: Geht weg, ich mag dich nicht. Doch als sich die zweite Stute demonstrativ nähert und ihren Kopf auf die Schulter legt, zieht die erste Stute ihre Mundwinkel zurück, sodass die Mundspalte verlängert wird. Ober- und Unterlippe werden in charakteristischer Weise hochgezogen, sodass Gebiss und Zahnfleisch deutlich sichtbar werden und der Kopf wird etwas abgesenkt und vorgestreckt. Das ist das Vollbild des sogenannten Rossigkeitsgesicht. Die Stute ist rossig, d.h. empfängnis- undpaarungsbereit. Das zeigt sie einem potentiellen Partner unter anderem auf diese Weise an.
Doch da kein Hengst im Gehege ist, nutzt auch das demonstrative Pinkeln als weitere Kommunikationsebene nichts. So bleibt ihr letztlich nichts anderes übrig als sich wieder zu beruhigen und das geht ja bekanntlich am besten beim Essen.

If you didn't know any better, you might think the Somali wild donkey's behavior was aggressive at first. The mare has both ears laid back. This could also mean: Go away, I don't like you. But when the second mare demonstratively approaches and puts her head on her shoulder, the first mare pulls back the corners of her mouth so that the mouth gap is extended. The upper and lower lips are pulled up in a characteristic manner so that the bit and gums are clearly visible, and the head is lowered slightly and stretched forward. This is the full picture of the so-called steed face. The mare is in heat, i.e. ready to conceive and mate. This is one of the ways she indicates this to a potential partner.
But since there is no stallion in the enclosure, even the demonstrative peeing as a further level of communication is of no use. So in the end there is nothing left for her but to calm down again, and as is well known, this is best done while eating.
