When you are done with the story of your first 4 initially available characters, Maki will be available and she is definitely an upgrade over all 4 and also Tsumuji if you unlocked him. However, she will still be bested by one more once you are done with her story. You should not have issues clearing the story with her since her car is already that cheap and considering how many times you have played the story to get to this progress (Easily 4 times the minimum by now).
