To utilize some neglected space in his backyard, this guy built a storage shed over it to cover it up. After preparing the landscape, he installed a few posts and built a frame for the shed. He then covered it with wooden planks, built a door and a roof for the shed, and finished the project. All this was done under a budget and looked nice and tidy once it was ready.

00:00What's up world, this is Brad from Project Build Stuff, and today we're turning this
00:04neglected corner of my backyard into this.
00:12Much as we hate to admit it, we all have that one neglected corner of our backyard that's
00:16overgrown and full of junk, and you're not alone, I certainly do as well.
00:21I got my garbage cans, some random outdoor tools, and even a small garden apparently.
00:27I didn't even know.
00:28But I think I have a really good plan to get this area cleaned up and super functional.
00:33So let's get everything pulled out of here first, and then we'll talk about the plan.
00:49With the retaining wall out of the way, let's look at what's left of my garden.
00:54It's pretty rough.
00:58These weeds are just dense and dangerous.
01:02Look at the size of those thorns.
01:05Man, they've already got me a few times.
01:09I think I need to bring in some reinforcements, because look at how thick these stalks are.
01:15That's like the size of my finger.
01:20I think I have just the right tool to clean up this whole mess.
01:50The Milwaukee M18 String Trimmer really packs a punch.
01:54Just check my face out here.
01:56The power even scared me a little bit.
01:58This made quick work of all these big, thick weeds, and it's great to have for any outdoor
02:03projects you're going to do around your home.
02:06I always like to keep my weeds and high grass in check.
02:10Be sure to check out the link down below in the description to this and all the other
02:14Milwaukee M18 tools that Home Depot offers.
02:17Thanks again, Home Depot, for sponsoring this video.
02:38This satellite dish pole is turning into way more of a headache than I anticipated.
02:42I thought it was going to be a quick dig out, and it is far worse than that.
02:46I even bent my metal pole trying to get it out.
02:50It's putting up a real fight.
02:52Let's run to Home Depot real quick, grab everything we need for this project, and we can try to
02:56find something that will help us out with that.
03:12Let's see if the San Angelo Bar will do the trick.
03:16Let's see if the San Angelo Bar will do the trick.
03:29Almost there.
03:40We did it.
03:47Man, there is already so much more room for activities.
03:53With everything cleaned out of here, I have a nice blank slate to work from, and it's
03:57looking really good.
03:58If your budget is real tight, you could just throw down some grass seed right now and call
04:03it a day and it would look great.
04:05I want a little more bang out here and some awesome usability and storage.
04:10Over here closest to the house, I'm going to build a small storage shed that I can keep
04:14all my outdoor equipment.
04:16Right here where I'm standing, I'm going to build a small paver patio for the garbage
04:20cans to sit on to keep them out of the mud.
04:22I think it's going to look awesome.
04:24Let's get to work and find out.
04:42To set these posts, I'm going to be using Quikrete Fast Setting Concrete.
04:46This is the same thing I used in my last outdoor video, my fire pit, which I'll leave a link
04:50to right up here in the corner.
04:52This is a great product because you don't have to mix anything.
04:55Just pour it in the hole, add some water, and in less than an hour, it's fully cured.
04:59I'll show you.
05:17With our posts in place, we're going to shift our focus away from the shed for a minute
05:23and down to the ground.
05:25We need to remove all the excess rocks and grass and level this whole area out so we
05:30can start putting in pavers.
05:31Then we're going to have to dig down about four inches in this paver section so that
05:36we have a nice base for the pavers to lay on.
05:38It's going to be a lot of back-breaking work, but we can do it.
05:46Let's do it.
06:07After a lot of sweating, our area is finally prepped for pavers.
06:10I ended up digging down about four to five inches.
06:13Normally, if you're setting pavers, you have to dig much deeper than that, between
06:17eight and ten inches, in order to accommodate for four inches of gravel as your base layer.
06:22That's so much gravel to buy and lug around, and a lot deeper I'd have to dig this hole,
06:26which I did not want to do.
06:28Instead, I discovered this new product called Paver Base that's so much easier to use.
06:33It's super light and actually the same exact cost per square foot as the gravel.
06:38You just cut it to size and lay it down, and you're ready to go.
06:43You can put your sand and your gravel right on top of this.
06:46So much easier, especially if you're doing this project all by yourself like me.
07:08Let's do it.
07:38As I'm flattening this out, it's real easy to see the low spots because they're not nearly
07:47as smooth.
07:48So I'm going to use my final bag of sand to fill in those, and then give it one more pass
07:52with the pipe.
08:09Now that all of our base layers are in place, we have a nice flat surface to start working
08:13with and finally laying our paver stones.
08:16I'm going with a simple, inexpensive holland stone, which is great because you can do a
08:21ton of different patterns with it.
08:26It can get overwhelming real quickly.
08:29I'm going with this pattern right here because it's a nice 90 degree pattern which will be
08:33easy to lay, but it gives a little bit of visual interest for this area.
09:03Barely got this done as the sun was going down, but man, it looks so good.
09:14Tomorrow, we finish up the shed.
09:17Back at it today.
09:18Let's get this shed done.
09:33Framing this shed is going to require cutting a lot of really weird angles.
09:54We could use a protractor and try to figure out all of those angles, but that would be
09:58a giant pain.
10:00So instead, we're going to use relative measurements.
10:02We're going to screw or clamp our boards into place where they need to go, and then scribe
10:08a line with our pencil that we can then go take to the circular saw and cut perfectly.
10:14They should fit in there just right, and we don't have to worry about any measurements
10:17or angles.
11:02Progress on the shed is coming along nicely, and we have all the framing done.
11:06This thing is super solid, and we'll have no problem holding up to all the snow and
11:10weather we get here in Indiana.
11:12But we're still missing a few things before we can finally put this to use.
11:16We still need a door, a roof, and some siding.
11:19So let's get back to work.
12:03For the siding on this shed, we're going to be using cedar fence pickets.
12:08They're an affordable option that also hold up really well outdoors.
12:11I'm going to be taking them into my shop to give them a little visual appeal on my table
12:15saw, but if you don't own a table saw, you can easily use them at their 6-inch width
12:20like they currently are, right on the side of your shed, and they'll look great.
13:03Our siding is almost complete, but I ran into a bit of an issue.
13:17I kind of nailed the gate shut.
13:19I wanted to continue these horizontal lines all the way across, but these top boards are
13:24locking the gate in place.
13:26So we're going to grab our circular saw, release the gate, and clean up these top angles.
15:33I am beyond excited on how nicely this project came out.
15:41It is really starting to look incredible out here.
15:44We have come a long way from that embarrassing, junk-filled corner that we started with to
15:49something I'm actually proud of.
15:52I might have to add this area to the house tour and make all my future guests come out
15:55here and look at it.
15:57So you know I always like to be fully transparent with you guys about the cost of these projects.
16:02For any of you that are getting ready to tackle it in your own home.
16:06So in total, I spent about $500 on this, $250 on the shed, and $250 on the pavers.
16:12If you were only going to do one of those, you could cut my cost in half.
16:16I hope you guys really enjoyed this video as much as I enjoyed building it and figuring
16:21out and solving all the problems that came along with it.
