Bhagavad Gita 2.58
by HG Dravida Dasa 3/21/2022
Unless one can follow the do’s and the don'ts of bhakti-yoga, engaging in the loving service of the Lord and restricting oneself from sense enjoyment, it is not possible to be firmly fixed in Krishna consciousness. The best example, set herein, is the tortoise. A tortoise can wind up its senses when they're not needed to accomplish some purpose, and later he can exhibit them when necessary. Similarly, a Krishna conscious person should use his senses only for some particular purpose in the service of the Lord, and he should withdraw them otherwise. Here Lord Krishna is teaching Arjuna to use his senses for the Lord's service instead of for his own satisfaction. Always engaging one's senses in the service of the Lord, and not otherwise, is the example set by the tortoise.
