A Kremlin spokesman said Wednesday's remarks by Joe Biden accusing the Russian president of war crimes were "unacceptable."

Dmitry Peskov's sentencing of the US president came shortly after Biden told White House reporter Vladimir Putin that he was a "war criminal" for an attack by his troops during the invasion of Ukraine. Mr Peskov dismissed the allegations as "inexcusable words".

Hours earlier, Ukrainian officials in Mariupol said a theater where more than 1,000 residents had taken refuge had been bombed by Russia.

The deputy mayor of the besieged port city, Sergei Orlov, told the BBC that elderly people, women and children had been taking shelter at the scene since the clashes began. While the number of casualties is unclear, Mr Orlov estimated between 1,000 and 12,000 people were present at the time of the attack.

The Russian Defense Ministry has denied responsibility and instead blamed the Ukrainian far-right militia Azov Battalion for blowing up the Donetsk Regional Theater. She did not provide any evidence to support this claim.
