The 300-and-a-half-year-old structure is a testament to the Mughal tradition. It was built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. [1] Historians differ on the date of its construction. It is known from the inscriptions on the walls of Imambara that it was built by Mir Murad, one of his naval generals during the reign of Shah Sujar, in the year 1052 AH (1642 AD) by Syed Mir Morad.Imambara in his enlarged Abul Kalam Mohammad Zakaria in his book 'Bangladesh's Antiquities' mentions the inscription on the wall of the building. Archaeologists have examined the inscription and found that it was not a forgery. The inscription mentions the name of Mir Murad as the creator. Historian M Hassan Dani also said, 'Mir Murad was the first to set up a small Imambara here.It was later demolished and rebuilt by the Naib-Nazims. Historian James Taylor mentions in his book that the original Imambara survived in 1832. During the East India Company period, Imambara was reformed in two phases. The building was almost destroyed in the earthquake of 1897. Later Khwaja Ahsanullah spent lakhs of rupees to rebuild and renovate it.The southern pond was renovated once in 1995 and again in 2011. Hosseini Dalan Imambara was renovated and beautified again in 2011.
