On February 16, the Office of the U.S. Trade
Representative accused China of failing to
open its markets to foreign competition. .
The U.S. also reportedly said that it is exploring
a way to combat China's aggressive trade practices. .
In 2001, China had promised to open up
to foreign markets when it joined the WTO.
China has instead retained and expanded
its state-led, non-market approach to
the economy and trade. China’s policies
and practices challenge the premise
of the WTO’s rules and cause serious harm
to workers and businesses around the world, Katherine Tai, U.S. Trade Representative, via Al Jazeera.

using subsidies and regulations to favor
Chinese companies over foreign competitors;.
inundating world markets with
cheap steel and other products; .
and forcing foreign companies,
including the U.S., to trade prized
technology for access to Chinese markets. .
According to the trade office, the U.S. is investigating new ways , “to use domestic trade tools strategically as needed
in order to achieve a more level playing field
with China for U.S. workers and businesses.’’
