A hedgehog is a short-legged spiny mammal that curls up into a ball when frightened. Adults forage for small insects and grubs in leaf litter in the wild, and the young, like most mammals, are fed milk during the first few weeks of life. Hedgehogs can be hand-reared from the age of a day or two, but temperature, hygiene, and feeding must all be carefully monitored.
