A Reuters investigation uncovered evidence that Amazon copied products and rigged search results in India. The company appears to have managed an internal system of building knockoff products, changing search results to boost results for its own brands and effectively piloting the program on the subcontinent. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said, “This is one of the many reasons we need to break it up.” Ken Buck of the House Antitrust Subcommittee said on social media, “These documents prove Amazon engages in anticompetitive practices.” Even so, Amazon stock rose over a percent in early trading.
