A contract worker for Tesla ($TSLA@US) was awarded $137 million after filing suit for workplace racism. A San Francisco jury awarded the money to Owen Diaz after he filed suit and was able to go to a jury trial because contract workers are not subject to mandatory arbitration. As a result, a resolution has been filed by Kristin Hull of Nia Impact Capital to address the impact of the company’s current use of mandatory arbitration to resolve harassment and discrimination claims. Hull noted, “This has taken a lot of environmental investors by surprise and they’re not happy.” Tesla opposes the resolution. Tesla stock fell nearly a dollar in early trading.
