Carol Hunnicut, a young divorcee, editor of a magazine, accepts a distinguished suitor's invitation to dinner, first going up for a moment to his luxurious apartment, as he has to take care of something urgent there. That luxury is the result of collaboration with an organization of criminals who are now extorting him, and Carol, terrified, involuntarily witnesses, unseen, the murder of the guest. Terrified by the doubt of having somehow been glimpsed by the killer or the instigator - a ruthless crime boss whom she recognizes - Carol takes refuge in a cabin in the mountains of Canada. Here she is joined by helicopter by Robert Caulfield, district attorney sent by the police with two agents to protect the woman, who is the only valuable witness to the crime. But the criminals have also identified her refuge, and they swoop in immediately afterwards. Having destroyed the police helicopter and eliminated the two officers, they chase Carol and Caulfield, who escaped the ambush and headed for the nearest train station. Once the latter also reach the station, they get on the same train behind Caulfield, who has just placed Carol in a reserved compartment. The hunt then continues inside the moving train, from wagon to wagon, from tunnel to tunnel, amidst reckless acrobatics and spectacular risks. In the end the killers are eliminated by Caulfield and the dangerous boss brought to justice.

00:05:57of here, I'm going to get you out of here, I'm going to get you out of here, I'm going
00:06:22If you would have let me know, I would have given you a call.
00:06:25Well, there's no need for that now, is there?
00:06:29You gonna invite us in?
00:06:31Uh, yeah, sure. Excuse me.
00:06:41Wooten, this is Michael Tarlow, my lawyer.
00:06:44Michael Jack Wooten.
00:06:46How do you do?
00:06:49Well, sit down. Can I get you something to drink?
00:06:51No, thank you.
00:06:53So, I take it you've been busy?
00:06:55Yeah.
00:06:56What brings you to Los Angeles?
00:06:58I was just closing the Galway deal. I should have papers on your desk by the end of the week.
00:07:02You didn't have to come all the way out here just for that. You could have done it by phone.
00:07:06Well, you know how it is. When you do things face to face, it's just a lot clearer.
00:07:10I agree.
00:07:15You seem edgy, Michael. Not like you.
00:07:18No, I'm fine.
00:07:21Ah.
00:07:26So, what can I do for you?
00:07:28I have a problem. I need your advice.
00:07:31Well, that's what you pay me for.
00:07:33Yes, that's right. That's what I pay you for.
00:07:37There's a man who works for me. He's close to me. I trusted him.
00:07:41So, what's the problem?
00:07:44The problem is that he got himself into some financial trouble. He made some investments.
00:07:50He leveraged himself up to his eyeballs.
00:07:53The investments didn't work out. He got himself in serious debt.
00:07:57Now, this man didn't come to me and tell me his problem.
00:08:01He didn't come to the man who trusted him and ask for help.
00:08:05What he did was he just took my money.
00:08:08Took a lot of it.
00:08:10He was very clever, so it was very hard to find out about.
00:08:14So, I need your advice, Michael.
00:08:16What should I do with this man?
00:08:20Leo.
00:08:22What do you think?
00:08:24What would you do?
00:08:26No, you don't understand, Leo.
00:08:28I understand.
00:08:29No, I can explain it. I can.
00:08:31Good. I would like you to.
00:08:35It's not what you think. I would never do this.
00:08:38Please, Michael. Have enough respect for me not to lie.
00:08:50I was desperate, Leo.
00:08:54I took some funds from the Khan Amalgamate account.
00:08:58To cover a loan.
00:09:02I was gonna pay you back, Leo. I swear.
00:09:05I'm so disappointed in you, Michael.
00:09:09For God's sake, you gotta believe me.
00:09:11You know I was gonna pay you back, Leo.
00:09:13Don't be afraid.
00:09:15You're acting like you think I'll harm you.
00:09:18Michael.
00:09:20Even though we were close.
00:09:22Even though you betrayed me.
00:09:24And I trusted you.
00:09:26I would never harm you.
00:09:29Now, here's what you're going to do.
00:09:32You're going to go back to New York.
00:09:35Someone else will close the Galway deal.
00:09:38I will never do business with you again.
00:09:40You will pay me back what you owe.
00:09:42With interest.
00:09:44You have to sell your nice apartment with the David Hockneys on the wall.
00:09:48Then you will do that.
00:09:50You will pay me back.
00:09:52I will never speak to you again.
00:09:55You're right, Michael.
00:09:56It's much better to talk these things over face to face.
00:09:58It's much clearer that way.
00:10:03Goodbye, Michael.
00:10:05Don't get up.
00:10:09Oh, Michael.
00:10:11I lied.
00:10:14I lied.
00:10:44I lied.
00:11:14I'm sorry.
00:11:44I'm sorry.
00:12:14I'm sorry.
00:12:41Yeah.
00:12:44Coffey here.
00:12:48What?
00:12:50How soon can you be here?
00:12:53Five minutes is too long.
00:12:55Right.
00:13:10He's in a conference.
00:13:13Good morning.
00:13:15Won't you come in?
00:13:17Martin, James.
00:13:19Detective Sergeant Bente.
00:13:20Nice to meet you.
00:13:22This is James Dahlbeck.
00:13:23Like Coffey, he's a deputy DA.
00:13:25He goes to trial tomorrow with the Atwater case.
00:13:27That's what we were in the middle of discussing.
00:13:29That's why my door was closed.
00:13:30I believe it's called a conference.
00:13:33Remember those ladens that we found on the bathroom glass in Michael Tarlow's hotel suite?
00:13:37Yes.
00:13:38They never checked out.
00:13:39They didn't check out in California.
00:13:41But while the city sleeps, Detective Sergeant Bente has been hard at work.
00:13:44I'm impressed.
00:13:46Go ahead, Detective Sergeant.
00:13:47Make me look good.
00:13:52We ran those prints through the federal computer.
00:13:54Turns out they belonged to one Carol Hunnigan.
00:13:56She was arrested for disorderly conduct in 1981 in Oregon.
00:13:59Some kind of anti-nuke bullshit.
00:14:01She works for a publishing company.
00:14:03She hasn't been there since the day Tarlow bought the farm.
00:14:06This is riveting.
00:14:07Give him a minute. He'll get your attention.
00:14:09I checked through our logs.
00:14:11Two days after Tarlow got ICE, we got a call.
00:14:14Some broad by the name of Constance Billings said her friend was missing.
00:14:17She seemed upset.
00:14:18We told her she could come in and file a missing persons report.
00:14:21Seemed to change her mind and said maybe her friend just went away for a few days.
00:14:25She never gave us the friend's full name.
00:14:27Just the first.
00:14:28Carol.
00:14:29Are you with us so far?
00:14:30I'm holding my own.
00:14:31I got the address of this Constance Billings and I went to see her this morning.
00:14:35Real early.
00:14:36You see them before they've had their first coffee and they rattle easier.
00:14:42Well, she didn't want to see me for nothing.
00:14:44She said she didn't know anything.
00:14:46She had total amnesia.
00:14:48She was scared shitless.
00:14:50I told her we'd protect her and her friend if she helped us.
00:14:52But we couldn't protect her if she didn't.
00:14:54She was as easy to crack as a raw egg.
00:14:56Then she comes out with it.
00:14:58The reason why this Hunnicutt Broad's fingerprints were on the bathroom glass
00:15:02is because she was in the hotel suite when Tarlow got hit.
00:15:06She saw it.
00:15:07She was there.
00:15:10It gets better.
00:15:17It gets a lot better.
00:15:19Guess who was in the room with the button man.
00:15:21You're kidding.
00:15:23Leo fucking Watts.
00:15:24In person.
00:15:25In living color.
00:15:26The woman was in the other room.
00:15:28She saw everything.
00:15:29Everything.
00:15:30Nobody knew about her.
00:15:31They still don't.
00:15:32Where is she?
00:15:33She understandably freaked and took off.
00:15:35She called her friend from the road.
00:15:36Told her what had happened and that she was still alive.
00:15:39She's hiding out in a cabin someplace in East Jesus.
00:15:43There is a gun.
00:15:44Unbelievable.
00:15:46I've charted a plane.
00:15:47The plane to a small strip will be met by a helicopter.
00:15:50Flown to where she is.
00:15:51I'll pick her up.
00:15:52Come back the same way.
00:15:53Nobody knows anything about her.
00:15:55Leo's in for a nice surprise.
00:15:57While I get her tucked away here, you get your warrant.
00:15:59What if she won't talk?
00:16:00Oh, she'll talk.
00:16:01You know this for a fact.
00:16:03Yeah, she'll talk.
00:16:04I'll promise her protection.
00:16:05I'll offer her relocation.
00:16:07She'll talk.
00:16:08She has to.
00:16:09Don't you think you ought to find out if she's going to cooperate before you go to see her?
00:16:11Well, there's no phone in this place.
00:16:12Anyway, she might just take off.
00:16:13Where is this place?
00:16:14It's up in Canada.
00:16:15I can't authorize that kind of expenditure without checking with the director of branch and area operations.
00:16:20You know that.
00:16:21I have to follow procedure.
00:16:22This is Leo Watts we're talking about.
00:16:24We've got him for murder one.
00:16:25You understand what that means?
00:16:27Yes, I do.
00:16:28I still have to check.
00:16:30What's the matter with you?
00:16:32There's nothing the matter with me.
00:16:33Why are you doing this again with Watts?
00:16:35Doing what?
00:16:36Last year we had a chance at him, and you put me in your bureaucratic blender, and we lost him.
00:16:41Your idea of a chance at him was uncooperated statements from an informant who was doing a hard time and who would sell his own mother to get his sentence reduced.
00:16:48As a matter of fact, I think he did actually try to sell his mother once, except she'd been dead for ten years.
00:16:53You want to make the announcement?
00:16:54Is that what you're worried about?
00:16:56I realize television cameras are something of an aphrodisiac to you.
00:16:59You can be on the 11 o'clock news.
00:17:01That satisfy you?
00:17:07Our job is to convict criminals, not to bring them to trial and then have them acquitted.
00:17:11I'm going to conduct business here in a proper and orderly way, whether it pleases you or not.
00:17:15And while we're on the subject, I don't think I like the implications of what you're saying.
00:17:21Let's go.
00:17:24We're going.
00:17:27We're going now.
00:17:28Not without my authorization.
00:17:47Why did you have to fly so long?
00:17:49We're not alone.
00:17:51We're not alone.
00:17:53The ground's high.
00:17:55See?
00:17:57Now we're high.
00:17:59I hate these things.
00:18:01Sorry, sir.
00:18:02Just a little turbulence in the thermals on the windward side of the mountain.
00:18:05I don't want to know about thermals.
00:18:07Well, sir, if nothing else, you do have to admit there's some pretty spectacular scenery out there.
00:18:12If I want scenery, I'll get a postcard.
00:18:14How much longer?
00:18:15We'll be there in less than five minutes, sir.
00:18:17Too long.
00:18:18What do you think he looks like?
00:18:21I don't care what you look like.
00:18:22I don't like the condition he's in.
00:18:25Do you realize when we go down, nobody's going to be able to find us except some fucking moose?
00:18:31You think Top Gun up there will be able to tell if somebody's following us?
00:18:35By what?
00:18:36A condor?
00:18:40There it is.
00:18:52Keep the motor running, okay?
00:19:06Warm.
00:19:22Miss Hunnicutt?
00:19:24I'm Detective Sergeant Dominic Finney, Los Angeles Police Department.
00:19:29With me is Deputy District Attorney Robert Caulfield.
00:19:35Miss Hunnicutt, we know you're in there.
00:19:37Well, we're out here all day.
00:19:38We have to.
00:19:39It's cold out here.
00:19:41Hope we don't have to.
00:19:44Can I see some identification, please?
00:19:59What do you want?
00:20:00I think you know what we want.
00:20:02I don't know what you're talking about.
00:20:04I'm not talking about you.
00:20:05I'm talking about the guy.
00:20:07I'm not talking about you.
00:20:08I'm talking about the guy.
00:20:10I'm not talking about you.
00:20:11I'm talking about the guy.
00:20:12I don't know what you're talking about.
00:20:13You were witness to a murder.
00:20:15We'd like you to come back and testify.
00:20:20I never saw anything.
00:20:23How did you find me?
00:20:24A friend of yours, Constance Billings, told us where you were.
00:20:27She said you saw a lot.
00:20:28I have nothing to say to you.
00:20:31You wouldn't happen to have a drink in there, would you?
00:20:34You're on duty.
00:20:35I only drink when I'm on duty.
00:20:38How do I know you men are who you say you are?
00:20:40We saw our ID.
00:20:41Well, I wouldn't know a real one from a fake one.
00:20:44If we were going to do you some harm, we would have done it already.
00:20:54There's coffee on the stove.
00:20:56Do you have any beer?
00:20:57No.
00:20:59Nice place.
00:21:00Thanks.
00:21:01Geez, she really doesn't have beer.
00:21:05Miss Honeycutt, we'd like to have you come back and testify.
00:21:08I'm not going to go anywhere with you.
00:21:10I didn't see anything.
00:21:11I don't know anything.
00:21:12I am not going to testify.
00:21:15Aren't you pleasant?
00:21:16Yes, when I want to be.
00:21:17Look, gentlemen, I really have nothing to say to you.
00:21:19I would like you to leave.
00:21:20I don't think you realize the situation you're in.
00:21:23I know exactly the situation I'm in.
00:21:26I don't think you do.
00:21:28We can protect you.
00:21:29If you stay here, they're going to find you.
00:21:30There's no reason for anyone to come after me.
00:21:33I'm not testifying.
00:21:35I have a subpoena.
00:21:36Let me see it.
00:21:41I can get one.
00:21:43I think you should leave.
00:21:44Lady, you're kidding yourself.
00:21:46You think those guys would come up here,
00:21:48you being the one person who put Leo Watts in the gas chamber,
00:21:51and you tell them you're not going to testify,
00:21:54and they'd say,
00:21:55wow, that's a relief, thanks, you have a nice day,
00:21:58then they'd turn around and go home?
00:22:00Is that what you believe?
00:22:02They'd never find me.
00:22:03We did.
00:22:05I'll take my chances.
00:22:11Ah!
00:22:17Did you get the keys to that car out there?
00:22:19On the table.
00:22:22Ah!
00:22:25I don't suppose there's a back door to this place, is there?
00:22:28No.
00:22:29How about a window?
00:22:31Yes, it's in the bathroom.
00:22:40Ah!
00:23:03You get to that window, all right?
00:23:06Be quiet, keep low.
00:23:07You wait for me there.
00:23:08Let's go, let's go.
00:23:11Let's go.
00:23:14Ah!
00:23:18Ah!
00:23:41Ah!
00:23:59Ah!
00:24:10Ah!
00:24:26I can't believe this.
00:24:27What have you done to me?
00:24:28Nobody knew where I was.
00:24:30I'm sorry.
00:24:32How the hell did I know they were following us?
00:24:34Aren't you supposed to know that?
00:24:35Isn't that your job?
00:24:36You're supposed to be stupid enough to let somebody follow you.
00:24:39We're supposed to be in the reporter's town.
00:24:40That's a place with a telephone.
00:24:41Eight miles down this road.
00:25:01Ah!
00:25:10Oh!
00:25:31Ah!
00:25:32Ah!
00:25:40Ah!
00:25:43Ah!
00:26:09Ah!
00:26:34Ah!
00:26:40The train's slowing down.
00:26:41How far to the station?
00:26:42About a half a mile.
00:26:57Ah!
00:27:10Ah!
00:27:18Ah!
00:27:33Ah!
00:27:34Ah!
00:27:40Ah!
00:28:00Let's go.
00:28:09Let's go.
00:28:33Excuse me.
00:28:35Where's the closest big town?
00:28:37I beg your pardon?
00:28:38Big city.
00:28:39You know, one with an airport.
00:28:40Where's the nearest one?
00:28:41Well, if you go east, about a hundred miles.
00:28:43Which way is this train here?
00:28:45It goes west, of course.
00:28:46Ah, damn.
00:28:47Vancouver's as big as you get.
00:28:49This train goes to Vancouver.
00:28:51How long does that take?
00:28:53You arrive in Vancouver at 10.40 in the morning.
00:28:55You're kidding.
00:28:56No, you're not kidding.
00:28:59I'd like a private compartment, please.
00:29:01Oh, I'm sorry, mister.
00:29:02All we got left is coach seats.
00:29:04Oh, I have to have a private compartment.
00:29:06Then wait until tomorrow.
00:29:07Another train will come through.
00:29:08I'll see if we've got space on that.
00:29:10Now, you don't understand.
00:29:11I have to be on that train.
00:29:17Well, I'd like to help you out, mister.
00:29:19There's nothing I can do.
00:29:20I have to be able to lie down.
00:29:21She has to lie down.
00:29:22If I go into labor again, I have to be able to lie down.
00:29:25Oh, well, the baby isn't due for another two weeks, but...
00:29:29I have to be able to lie down.
00:29:30Well, don't worry, honey.
00:29:31It's okay.
00:29:32Don't worry.
00:29:33Excuse me, sir.
00:29:34I couldn't help overhearing.
00:29:35My wife and I, we have a compartment,
00:29:37and you kids look as though you need it more than we do.
00:29:40Oh, we couldn't do that.
00:29:41No, please, I insist.
00:29:42I remember how it was with our Mark.
00:29:45Is this your first?
00:29:46Yes.
00:29:47That's very kind of you.
00:29:48Thank you.
00:29:49I'm going to pay for both tickets.
00:29:50Oh, well...
00:29:51No, I insist.
00:29:52Is there a phone on the train?
00:29:54Afraid not.
00:29:55$195, please.
00:29:59That's car 564, drawing room A.
00:30:03It's toward the end of the train.
00:30:05Okay.
00:30:06Thank you.
00:30:11You get on the train, okay?
00:30:13Don't wait for me.
00:30:14Get in the drawing room.
00:30:15Lock the door.
00:30:16Don't let anybody in.
00:30:17Don't answer for anybody, all right?
00:30:18They probably haven't seen you.
00:30:22Go.
00:30:23Go.
00:30:30I'm really very grateful.
00:30:31Oh, that's quite all right.
00:30:32Thank you.
00:30:33You take care of the little lady now.
00:31:03Hi.
00:31:24Hi there.
00:31:25Watch your step, man.
00:31:32Thank you.
00:32:02Thank you.
00:32:33Thank you.
00:32:58Yes?
00:32:59I figured there'd been some mistake.
00:33:01This is my compartment.
00:33:02Well, if there's been a mistake, it's yours.
00:33:04This is our compartment.
00:33:05Are you sure?
00:33:06Yes, of course I'm sure.
00:33:07Now, could you please excuse us?
00:33:09Well, the conductor told me this was mine.
00:33:11Well, the conductor couldn't have said that.
00:33:13This is our compartment.
00:33:14Uh-huh.
00:33:15Could I see your ticket, please?
00:33:16Can I see yours?
00:33:19My wife has our tickets.
00:33:20Well, maybe your wife is in the proper car.
00:33:23This is my son.
00:33:24This is not your wife.
00:33:26This is our compartment, not your compartment.
00:33:28I would like you to leave.
00:33:30I'm fine.
00:33:32I'm sorry for the inconvenience, really.
00:33:34I'm always getting myself into these kinds of things.
00:33:37One time, I lost my car.
00:33:41I parked it in a parking lot, and I just...
00:33:44I forgot where I had parked it.
00:33:45I just...
00:33:48You know what that's like?
00:33:49No, I don't know what that's like.
00:33:50Would you please get out of here?
00:33:52Yes, of course.
00:33:53I'm sorry.
00:34:01Is this car 564?
00:34:04No.
00:34:05Well, there you are.
00:34:06You see, I've done it again.
00:34:08I'm supposed to be in car 564.
00:34:10Well, maybe you should go to car 564.
00:34:13You wouldn't happen to know where that car is, would you?
00:34:15No, I wouldn't.
00:34:17He's my mom.
00:34:19He's a train robber.
00:34:20What would I want with a train?
00:34:22Do you have a gun?
00:34:23You know, I guess I should go see the conductor.
00:34:26He would know where car 564 is, wouldn't you think?
00:34:29I would expect so.
00:34:30Why don't you do that?
00:34:31I'll do that.
00:34:32I'll go find him, and then I'll just ask him where car 564 really is.
00:34:37Good idea.
00:34:38Well, uh...
00:34:40Sorry for the inconvenience.
00:34:47You folks have a nice trip.
00:34:48You too.
00:34:49You too.
00:34:58It's me, Coffey.
00:35:03How you doing?
00:35:04I've been better.
00:35:05Yeah, me too.
00:35:07So, are we expecting company?
00:35:09Well, there's two of them.
00:35:10It's not going to take them very long to find his compartment.
00:35:12I don't know.
00:35:17I'm getting off at the next stop.
00:35:19That's impossible.
00:35:20You watch me.
00:35:21We'd be sitting ducks out there.
00:35:24Who said anything about we?
00:35:26You're going out there alone.
00:35:30We're in the middle of a goddamn wilderness, in case you hadn't noticed.
00:35:33Take a look out the window, for Christ's sakes.
00:35:35You're going out there on foot.
00:35:37Well, that should be a breeze.
00:35:38I have a much better chance of protecting you in here.
00:35:40Protect me?
00:35:41You're the one who put me in danger.
00:35:47I'm not stupid, Mr. Coffey.
00:35:51I'm not going to survive stuck on this train until tomorrow.
00:35:55Let me tell you something.
00:35:57A police officer died trying to help get you back to Los Angeles.
00:36:00He was a good man.
00:36:02I'm going to get you back there, I promise.
00:36:05I can't tell you what a comfort that is.
00:36:08I don't think I like you.
00:36:09The weekend in Paris is off.
00:36:11You got a big mouth.
00:36:12At least you could put it to good use on the witness stand.
00:36:15I don't think you hear very well.
00:36:17I am not testifying at this trial.
00:36:19You still don't get it, do you?
00:36:21These guys are grown-ups. They got automatic weapons.
00:36:23It doesn't matter what you tell them.
00:36:24If they see you, they're going to kill you.
00:36:26We got two things going for us.
00:36:28One, they've seen me.
00:36:30They might not have seen you.
00:36:31They might not know what you look like.
00:36:33And?
00:36:34And...
00:36:36We got one thing going for us.
00:36:38And I've got you to protect me.
00:36:44Who is it?
00:36:45Conductor, sir.
00:36:47Yes.
00:36:48I'm sorry to disturb you.
00:36:50A gentleman has lost his briefcase.
00:36:54Yeah.
00:37:01Well, we think maybe the porter left it in one of these compartments by mistake.
00:37:07We're checking the whole car.
00:37:08It's not in here.
00:37:10You're welcome to take a look if you like.
00:37:12Thank you.
00:37:20I guess it's not in here.
00:37:21I guess not.
00:37:23I'm sure it's in this car someplace.
00:37:26Maybe not.
00:37:30We'll keep looking.
00:37:32I'm sorry to have bothered you, sir.
00:37:37Thank you.
00:37:43He'll be back, won't he?
00:37:44Yeah.
00:37:46How do we stop him?
00:37:47We don't.
00:37:49You want me to set out some hors d'oeuvres?
00:37:52I want you to do exactly what I tell you to do.
00:38:08I'm sorry.
00:38:22Let's go.
00:38:31Come on.
00:38:33Come on.
00:38:37Come on.
00:39:07Come on.
00:39:31Come on.
00:39:37Yeah.
00:39:40Thanks.
00:39:43Excuse me, I wasn't looking where it was going.
00:39:45That's quite all right, sir.
00:39:48Operator, I want to make a quick call to James Dahlbeck.
00:39:50My name is Caulfield.
00:39:51C-A-U-L-F-I-E-L-D.
00:40:08Caulfield.
00:40:09Where the hell are you?
00:40:10I'm on a train.
00:40:12You're on a what?
00:40:13We were followed.
00:40:14Listen, Sergeant Benty is dead.
00:40:16That's impossible.
00:40:17It seems strange that Lerner doesn't want to send me up here and then we're followed, doesn't it?
00:40:21No, you're way off base.
00:40:23Oh, you think so?
00:40:24Two times in one year, he tries to stop me.
00:40:26That's stretching coincidence a little bit, don't you think?
00:40:29Well, I don't know what to say.
00:40:30Well, don't say anything. Just listen.
00:40:32There's at least two guys following us.
00:40:34One of them has an automatic weapon.
00:40:35One of them has an automatic weapon.
00:40:36Maybe they both do. I don't know.
00:40:38The helicopter was destroyed and the pilot is dead.
00:40:41The perps are still on the train, okay?
00:40:43They've seen me. I don't think they've seen the girl.
00:40:45They don't know what she looks like.
00:40:46But they sure as hell know what I look like.
00:40:48I don't think we can stay on the train.
00:41:00Where the hell is this train?
00:41:01We're heading west towards Vancouver.
00:41:03We'll be in there about ten o'clock in the morning.
00:41:05I don't think we can hold out that long before they find her.
00:41:07Where's the next stop?
00:41:08Uh, a town called Mona Shee.
00:41:12We'll be in there about midnight.
00:41:13All right, all right.
00:41:15Do what you can to keep the girl hidden until then.
00:41:17I'll have you met at the next station.
00:41:19Okay, but listen.
00:41:20Don't say anything to Larner about this, all right?
00:41:22I won't.
00:41:23Hey, you hang in there.
00:41:26Yes, sir.
00:41:33Shit.
00:42:03Shit.
00:42:34Shit.
00:43:01He's gone.
00:43:04He's gone.
00:43:07We're changing cars.
00:43:08Let's hope this gets to Buck.
00:43:16We get into the next station around midnight.
00:43:18There'll be some people there to meet us.
00:43:24We'll get off this damn train.
00:43:25Oh, thank God.
00:43:34You know, these guys can't just go blasting everybody in sight.
00:43:37They're professionals.
00:43:38They start a war on a train in the middle of the boondocks.
00:43:41They get a good chance of being caught.
00:43:46They have to find you and do it cleanly without drawing attention to themselves.
00:43:53As long as they don't know where you are, you're okay.
00:43:57It's gonna be okay, really.
00:44:00I'm telling you, it's gonna be all right.
00:44:04I'm not going to Los Angeles with you.
00:44:06I'm telling you right now, I'm not going.
00:44:08Are you hungry?
00:44:09Oh, I don't know.
00:44:10I'll go to the club car and get you something to eat.
00:44:12I'm not hungry.
00:44:13You lock this door behind me.
00:44:14Don't let the porter or the conductor, the damn...
00:44:16I said I'm not hungry.
00:44:18You need something to eat.
00:44:20Okay, you stay and I'll go.
00:44:22What?
00:44:23Every time you leave this compartment and every time you come back, you put me in danger.
00:44:28You said they know what you look like.
00:44:30They don't know what I look like.
00:44:32I have a better chance if I go myself.
00:44:34Supposing they do know what you look like.
00:44:36Maybe they've seen you.
00:44:38Maybe you're photographed with fax along with your fingerprints when they checked you out.
00:44:42You wanna risk that?
00:44:43You're not going to that club car because you wanna bring me food.
00:44:46Lock the door behind me.
00:45:02May I get you something to drink, sir?
00:45:26Yeah, a beer, please.
00:45:27What kind of beer would you like?
00:45:29Oh, I don't know.
00:45:30You choose.
00:45:31Yes, sir.
00:45:36I'm terribly sorry.
00:45:39It's all right.
00:45:40Does it hurt?
00:45:41No, no, it's okay.
00:45:42It's just my foot.
00:45:43I can grow another one in a week.
00:45:45I'm so clumsy.
00:45:47It's all right, really.
00:45:48It's not you, it's the train.
00:45:49It's very bumpy, that's all.
00:45:50No, no, it's me.
00:45:51I'm always doing things like that.
00:45:55Sorry again.
00:45:56It's okay.
00:45:57It's okay.
00:45:58It's the same foot.
00:46:00Can I buy you something to drink?
00:46:02No, no, that's not necessary.
00:46:03No, I'd like to.
00:46:04I'm fine, really.
00:46:05I insist.
00:46:06I am clumsy, but I have money.
00:46:08Well, I'm not that liberated yet.
00:46:10I'll have the same, please.
00:46:12And this is for both of them.
00:46:14Sure.
00:46:15Here, let me...
00:46:16No, no, no, Stanley.
00:46:17It's so difficult to live.
00:46:19I feel like Bill Donahue.
00:46:21My name's Catherine Miller.
00:46:25I'm Robert Caulfield.
00:46:27How are you?
00:46:28Good.
00:46:32You don't look like somebody who takes the train.
00:46:34Oh, really?
00:46:36Well, what does somebody who takes the train look like?
00:46:39Patient.
00:46:40Yeah, this is the first time I've done this.
00:46:42Oh.
00:46:45Thank you.
00:46:47How about you?
00:46:48Do you do this often?
00:46:49No, not often.
00:46:50I, uh...
00:46:52I was trying to water-ski on Lake Louise.
00:46:54I, um...
00:46:55I wasn't very good at it.
00:46:56I tend to fall down a lot.
00:46:57I noticed.
00:47:01I'm also terrified of flying, so...
00:47:03Really?
00:47:04I don't mind that at all.
00:47:07Well, I'm in no rush.
00:47:09One thing I have is time.
00:47:13You also said you had money.
00:47:16I had a good divorce lawyer.
00:47:24Am I interrupting you?
00:47:25No, no, no.
00:47:26I'm sorry. Really, I...
00:47:29Well, here's to, uh, community property.
00:47:34Come to think of it, I earned it.
00:47:39Are you...
00:47:41Are you traveling alone?
00:47:42Yes.
00:47:46How long were you married?
00:47:48Six years.
00:47:51One day over bran muffins.
00:47:52He loved bran muffins.
00:47:54He said he had to find himself.
00:47:56Just like that.
00:47:57I'm standing there with a pot of brewed decaf.
00:48:00The only drink, brewed decaf.
00:48:02And he said he had to find himself.
00:48:04I asked him if he wanted to finish his breakfast first.
00:48:07Before I knew it, he had taken his air popcorn maker,
00:48:10no cholesterol, you see,
00:48:11and his life cycle,
00:48:12and he'd moved into this very nice duplex
00:48:15with a 23-year-old waitress from one of his restaurants.
00:48:18Not bad for somebody who was lost.
00:48:20Well, he owns a lot of restaurants,
00:48:21so I don't think he'll run out of waitresses.
00:48:24You'll have to excuse me.
00:48:26I'm sorry. I've been talking too much.
00:48:28I tend to do it a lot.
00:48:29No, it's not you.
00:48:30I understand.
00:48:31No, you don't understand.
00:48:32I wish I could explain, but...
00:48:34By the way, I think your restaurant guy is nuts.
00:48:50I don't think this is going to work.
00:49:20I'll back up. It's shorter this way.
00:49:22I appreciate that.
00:49:23These things weren't designed for people my size.
00:49:29No one loves a fat man but his grocer.
00:49:48Did you find your briefcase yet, sir?
00:49:50No, not yet.
00:49:52Your seats are up at the head of the train, I think.
00:49:55Yes, that's right.
00:49:57I get mixed up.
00:49:58Well, it can be confusing, sir.
00:50:00Thank you.
00:50:20Morning.
00:50:23Please, I'm not going to hurt you.
00:50:31I'm sorry.
00:50:32I'm sorry.
00:50:53You're supposed to say something.
00:51:01What?
00:51:03Something reassuring.
00:51:05It's going to work out.
00:51:09Thanks. That made a world of difference.
00:51:13I'll be in the station soon.
00:51:15You'll be safe when we get there.
00:51:19I hope they've gotten to your cabin by now.
00:51:21They've taken care of Benteen.
00:51:23He shouldn't be left alone like that.
00:51:26I'm sorry about your friend.
00:51:28Really, my friend?
00:51:33I just met him.
00:51:38Jerk.
00:51:40Two years away from retirement.
00:51:44I'm sorry.
00:51:46Are you?
00:51:48There are two guys on this train.
00:51:50One of them killed a police officer and a pilot.
00:51:53I couldn't see in the helicopter.
00:51:54I couldn't identify them.
00:51:56You couldn't identify them.
00:51:59Except, they're the guys.
00:52:03They work for Leo Watts.
00:52:05There's nothing I can do.
00:52:08All I can charge him with is riding on a train.
00:52:10They're going to walk.
00:52:15It'll be a funeral for Benteen.
00:52:18It'll be like Draper Coffin.
00:52:20Everybody in dress blues.
00:52:21There's a picture up on the precinct wall.
00:52:24People saying how terrible it was.
00:52:27Another funeral for the pilot.
00:52:29Not as spiffy as Benteen's. No flags.
00:52:31Nothing like that.
00:52:33There'll be two wives serving a lot of food for people.
00:52:36Two groups of children trying to be very brave.
00:52:40Those two guys died trying to help get you back to Los Angeles.
00:52:44Those guys who killed him, they're going to walk.
00:52:49Unless you testify against the man that sent them up here.
00:52:59Two years from retirement.
00:53:07What a jerk.
00:53:27Keep the lights out.
00:53:42Jesus, they didn't exactly bring out the National Guard, did they?
00:53:48I guess they didn't want to attract too much attention.
00:53:51You stay here, okay?
00:53:54Don't do anything but just stay out of sight.
00:53:58When we're ready, when I think it's secure, I'll come and get you.
00:54:04Oh, and...
00:54:05I know, I know. Lock.
00:54:27Are you Caulfield?
00:54:28Yeah.
00:54:29I'm Sergeant Nigro, RCMP.
00:54:31This is Detective Laughlin.
00:54:35They sent two of you, huh?
00:54:36Well, it's a pretty remote area.
00:54:38Backup's on the way.
00:54:39So you guys are Mounties.
00:54:41Yes.
00:54:43We don't really use horses anymore.
00:54:45It's mostly for the tourists.
00:54:46Besides, horses don't have air conditioning.
00:54:51Look, I don't think we should stand around out here any longer than is necessary.
00:54:56Where's the woman?
00:54:57She's on the train.
00:54:59I've got her hidden.
00:55:01A couple of guys on the train have been following us.
00:55:03They're armed.
00:55:04I think I've got them on a possible 314, though.
00:55:07I think we should get the woman into safe custody.
00:55:09The 314s can't get anywhere.
00:55:11Send some units down to meet the train at the next stop.
00:55:14We'll nail them.
00:55:16I think you're right.
00:55:17Well, why don't you go get the woman and we can get out of here.
00:55:21Right.
00:55:24Listen, I know you're going to think this is real dumb of me,
00:55:27but I haven't been feeling very good lately and my stomach, you know.
00:55:31So I really got to just run over here to the toilet just for a second.
00:55:34What, are you serious?
00:55:36Yeah, hey, I don't have any choice.
00:55:38You know what it's like.
00:55:39I'll be right back.
00:55:54I'll be right back.
00:56:24I'll be right back.
00:56:55Mr. Garfield?
00:56:57You all right?
00:57:00Garfield?
00:57:24Shit.
00:57:34A 314 is indecent exposure.
00:57:36You're no cop.
00:57:37Who sent you?
00:57:38Fuck you.
00:58:05You're a dead man.
00:58:06You know that.
00:58:34Fuck.
00:59:04Fuck.
00:59:34Fuck.
01:00:04Fuck.
01:00:34Fuck.
01:01:04Fuck.
01:01:34Fuck.
01:02:04Fuck.
01:02:29You all right?
01:02:30Yeah.
01:02:31That was close.
01:02:33I thought you were going to walk.
01:02:35I didn't realize the train was leaving.
01:02:36You could have been hurt.
01:02:38Yeah, that was real stupid of me.
01:02:40I'd never do that again.
01:02:41I certainly hope not.
01:02:44Listen.
01:03:17Mr. Garfield.
01:03:42I have a business proposition that might interest you.
01:03:46Would you gentlemen care for a drink?
01:03:47What will you have?
01:03:48It's my treat.
01:03:49Coffee, please.
01:03:50My friend here will have a cup of coffee, please.
01:03:51Seven and seven for me and scotch on the rocks for my associate.
01:03:54Thank you.
01:03:55I figured him for something with a little umbrella in it.
01:03:58If you're trying to get him to lose his composure, you're not going to succeed.
01:04:00He's very good at what he does.
01:04:02So am I.
01:04:03The difference between us is that I do it for a living and he enjoys it.
01:04:07Well, I think that people should have fun at work.
01:04:09It makes a day go by much quicker.
01:04:12As I said, I have a business proposition for you.
01:04:17Tell me.
01:04:20How much does a deputy district attorney make in a year?
01:04:24Enough.
01:04:25No, I doubt that.
01:04:26You think he'd become a lawyer?
01:04:28No, no.
01:04:29I was thinking that we might perhaps negotiate an arrangement that would be neutrally satisfactory.
01:04:34He says he thinks we can make a deal.
01:04:39Does he speak?
01:04:42Sometimes very convincingly.
01:04:44I'm going to enjoy this.
01:04:48Thank you. Keep the change.
01:04:49Thank you, sir.
01:04:53The people I work for are very determined.
01:04:55They want the woman.
01:04:58You have her.
01:04:59And the question is simply, how much do you want?
01:05:04What woman?
01:05:07You know we're going to find her.
01:05:08It's just a matter of time.
01:05:10What I'm proposing here is that you recognize the inevitable.
01:05:15I don't know what woman you're talking about.
01:05:17First you lost your briefcase, and now you've lost some woman.
01:05:21You guys ought to be more careful.
01:05:23The people I work for have a large investment in this matter.
01:05:28And they are very determined.
01:05:31You sound like interesting people.
01:05:32Very interesting.
01:05:33You have a good dental plan, do you?
01:05:35What I'm talking about is probably ten times what you earn in a year,
01:05:41including whatever you steal on your expense account.
01:05:43I don't steal.
01:05:44An honest man, I like that.
01:05:45So do I.
01:05:46Ten times.
01:05:48You could never get that far ahead if you worked for another 30 years.
01:05:51And then there's always the possibility that you won't survive that long.
01:05:55It's true.
01:05:59All you have to do is point her out and look the other way.
01:06:03Well, that's not a great deal of effort for more money than you ever dreamed of.
01:06:07And no risk.
01:06:08No risk to you at all.
01:06:09You can go through all the motions of guarding her.
01:06:12We'll take care of the rest.
01:06:13Now, this offer doesn't stay on the table for too long.
01:06:16Obviously, we're going to find the woman.
01:06:18There are a couple of things that you should know before you make your decision.
01:06:22Jack, show him what you have.
01:06:29Do you know what this is?
01:06:31I have a feeling you're going to tell me.
01:06:33It seems that something has happened to the communications gear on this train.
01:06:36There is no way for anyone to radio ahead.
01:06:39That's a shame.
01:06:41The other item that might interest you is that when this train reaches its destination,
01:06:44there are going to be some people waiting for you.
01:06:47Quite a few of them.
01:06:48They're not like us.
01:06:50We have no desire for needless violence.
01:06:53We're professionals, just like you.
01:06:56If an ugly incident occurs while we're on this train with no method of escape,
01:06:59that is not in our self-interest either.
01:07:01However, the men that are waiting for you, that is a different matter.
01:07:06They're simply not going to let you and that woman get off this train and walk away.
01:07:09It's as simple as that.
01:07:11I've been doing some checking on you, Mr. Caulfield.
01:07:13You have an interesting resume.
01:07:15Top of your law school class.
01:07:17A decorated Marine.
01:07:19And you have a reputation for being a very good prosecutor.
01:07:23You also have a reputation for having something of a big mouth.
01:07:27It seems that you've pissed off too many people.
01:07:29You're never going to be the district attorney.
01:07:31It's a shame, isn't it?
01:07:33I suppose there's two reasons why someone would remain a deputy district attorney.
01:07:37You are either rich or you're afraid to go out on your own.
01:07:39No, there's a third reason too.
01:07:43I don't like people like you.
01:07:45And I really don't like people like your boss.
01:07:47I enjoy putting you away, I really do.
01:07:50If I wanted to make money, I'd have to defend you.
01:07:53And that wouldn't be any fun.
01:07:55You know, I always feel like I need to shower.
01:07:57I enjoy sitting in the courtroom, looking across as a judge passes a sentence,
01:08:01as your shirt collar starts to get a little too tight.
01:08:04I'm going to love sitting there watching Leo Watts.
01:08:08I like my side of the courtroom.
01:08:10The pay's not so good, but the air is a lot better.
01:08:12I am offering you enough money that your whole life would be different.
01:08:16Don't tell me that you're above temptation.
01:08:20I'm very tempted to that's your offer, yes.
01:08:22There's just one small problem.
01:08:24What's that?
01:08:25I don't know who this woman is you keep talking about.
01:08:29I'm really going to enjoy this.
01:08:31Give it a rest, Lee.
01:08:34There are no more stops between here and Vancouver.
01:08:37You can't get off the train, either can the woman.
01:08:40You don't have a lot of choice.
01:08:42Think about it.
01:08:44I will.
01:08:46Do you really think you can get her off this train?
01:08:48Get who?
01:08:54Well, thank you for the coffee.
01:09:02I've really enjoyed this little chat. I really have.
01:09:05I must go now.
01:09:06We'll talk again.
01:09:07Yeah.
01:09:08I'm in the book.
01:09:19Oh, my God.
01:09:26It's me.
01:09:30Jesus Christ, what happened?
01:09:35Your friend, Leo Watts.
01:09:37He's got a buddy in the DA's office. His name is Dahlbeck.
01:09:40There's two guys he sent here. They weren't cops.
01:09:43I thought you were dead.
01:09:44Well, I'm not.
01:09:46Forget this.
01:09:47When I get to L.A., Dahlbeck is mine.
01:09:49If you get to L.A.
01:09:50We'll get there.
01:09:51How?
01:09:52I'll take care of it.
01:09:53Are you telling me not to worry?
01:09:54I'm pretty glad when you work everything out.
01:09:57This is my life we're dealing with.
01:09:59Who the hell do you think you are?
01:10:01I thought you were dead.
01:10:02I thought I was on my own.
01:10:04You come glancing in here with your fancy ID and tell me not to worry.
01:10:08You're really a jerk.
01:10:12My friend, Leo Watts.
01:10:15Do you know what really happened?
01:10:17I mean, do you know anything about me?
01:10:19No, you're Michael Tarlow's girlfriend.
01:10:24Well, it must be really nice not to let knowledge get in your way.
01:10:33I never met Michael Tarlow in my life before that night.
01:10:39I was fixed up on a blind date by a well-meaning friend.
01:10:45I saw a man get murdered.
01:10:47I don't know if he was a good man or if he was a bad man.
01:10:51Except I saw someone take his life as casually as you'd buy a stick of gum.
01:10:57It's not like it is on television.
01:10:59It was horrible.
01:11:00It's not a part of my life.
01:11:03It's something you read about, except that it never happens to you.
01:11:12I don't know how I got home that night.
01:11:14The most difficult part was trying to act normal when I paid off the babysitter.
01:11:21Yes, I have a son.
01:11:23He's ten years old.
01:11:25But then I thought you would have known that since you know everything about me.
01:11:29I just went into his room that night and watched him sleeping.
01:11:32I thought maybe the sight of that kind of innocence would make the world seem a little less horrible.
01:11:38It didn't.
01:11:40It was all over the eleven o'clock news about who Michael Tarlow was.
01:11:44But he was a lawyer for this famous gangster named Leo Watts.
01:11:50I had a photograph of Leo Watts on television.
01:11:52It was the man in the hotel room.
01:11:54All I could think of was to run.
01:11:59I took my son to his father's house.
01:12:01I told his father to go away right then.
01:12:05Not to tell anybody where he was going, not even me.
01:12:09I knew I had to get as far away from my son as I could.
01:12:13I went to my brother's cabin.
01:12:16It's so remote, I thought I would be safe there if even no one could find me.
01:12:20So don't you ever judge me.
01:12:23Don't you dare.
01:12:26I'm scared stiff.
01:12:31I don't want to die.
01:12:36I'd gladly die for my son, however.
01:12:40This is not just about me.
01:12:44I would like to do the right thing.
01:12:47I really would, I just...
01:12:49I'm just so scared.
01:12:52This is not just about me.
01:12:59So here's the program.
01:13:01You're going to tell me what is going on.
01:13:03And you're going to tell me what ideas you have, if you have any.
01:13:06I need to know.
01:13:10I'm sorry.
01:13:15They still don't know where you are.
01:13:18I don't think they'll make a move tonight, because they don't have to.
01:13:21We have to do something before this train makes the last stop, though.
01:13:26We can't get off the train.
01:13:30If there's anybody I can call for help.
01:13:34They've got somebody else on the train.
01:13:37Besides the two guys, I think I know who it is.
01:13:40It's a big, fat guy.
01:13:44I...
01:13:46I don't know exactly what I'm going to do.
01:13:50I just know that I...
01:13:52I have to make my move before they make theirs.
01:13:57Why don't you try to get some sleep now? You're going to need it.
01:14:02I can't sleep.
01:14:04Don't worry. I'll be up.
01:14:08Okay.
01:14:14You should wash that.
01:14:18Thank you.
01:14:37It's okay.
01:14:55It's okay.
01:14:56Nothing's happened.
01:14:58Okay?
01:14:59We're not dead yet?
01:15:00No.
01:15:02We're not dead yet.
01:15:04Well, that's good.
01:15:06I'm going to leave you alone for a little while.
01:15:09Where are you going?
01:15:10To the dining car.
01:15:11If I'm there, they can't get by me without my seeing them first.
01:15:16If they come after me, at least you won't be right next to me.
01:15:29You'll be all right.
01:15:31Would you like some coffee?
01:15:33That would be nice.
01:15:55Freeze, mister. You're not robbing this train.
01:15:58Jesus Christ.
01:15:59That thing's not for real, is it?
01:16:01Of course not. I'm a kid.
01:16:02You shouldn't go around pointing that thing at people. You know, you could get hurt.
01:16:05You shouldn't go around robbing people. You could go to jail.
01:16:08I'm not a robber.
01:16:09I don't believe you.
01:16:10Yeah, well...
01:16:12Listen, I gotta go.
01:16:13I didn't say you could move.
01:16:16No, I gotta go.
01:16:17I'll be watching you.
01:16:19What's your name?
01:16:20Nick.
01:16:23Do you always go around pretending you're a cop?
01:16:25Sometimes I'm the bad guy.
01:16:26Yeah, I understand.
01:16:27But right now you're a cop.
01:16:28Mm-hmm.
01:16:30Can you keep a secret?
01:16:31Of course I can.
01:16:44Suppose I told you I was really a cop.
01:16:47No way.
01:16:48Suppose I could prove it to you.
01:16:50Suppose I asked you for your help.
01:16:53Would you give it to me?
01:16:54Suppose I asked you for your help.
01:16:56Would you give it to me?
01:16:57Without telling anybody?
01:16:58Not saying anything to anyone?
01:17:01Prove it.
01:17:07Is that real?
01:17:08Yes, it is.
01:17:09No shit.
01:17:10No shit.
01:17:11This doesn't say you're a real cop.
01:17:12I can read, you know.
01:17:13Well, it says I'm a deputy, doesn't it?
01:17:15Are you on a case?
01:17:16Yeah, a big one.
01:17:18Where's your gun?
01:17:20Well, I don't have it.
01:17:21If you're a real cop, how come you don't have a gun?
01:17:23Well, that's the problem.
01:17:25The bad guys took it.
01:17:26Are you kidding me?
01:17:27I wish I was.
01:17:29I need your help.
01:17:30You do?
01:17:31I need to borrow your gun.
01:17:33But it's not real.
01:17:34Well, we won't tell anybody about that, okay?
01:17:37Raise your right hand.
01:17:39Put your left hand on the gun.
01:17:41I'm gonna deputize you.
01:17:42According to the laws of the state of California,
01:17:44international laws of criminal justice,
01:17:47I hereby deputize you a special assistant,
01:17:51subject to all the laws of secrecy and jurisprudence.
01:17:55Help me, God.
01:17:56Say, I do.
01:17:57I do.
01:17:58What does it mean?
01:17:59It means if you say anything about this,
01:18:03your ass is grass.
01:18:05Okay.
01:18:06Okay, deputy.
01:18:07Go see your mother now.
01:18:08Just act normal.
