Jazmine Sullivan was one of the performers tonight at the 2021 BET Awards, and she performed her new song “Tragic.” Before she appeared, Representative Maxine Waters walked out on stage and pronounced: “Reclaiming my time.” (The words “reclaiming my time” are a central theme of Sullivan’s new single.) Sullivan then performed “On It” with Ari Lennox. Watch it happen below.
Sullivan’s Heaux Tales won Album of the Year over projects from Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, Nas, and Chloe x Halle. She brought her mother up on stage, and in a tearful speech, talked about how her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago and is now in remission. She dedicated the award to all the Black women who inspired her throughout her life.
After Sullivan released Heaux Tales earlier this year, she performed a “Tiny Desk (Home) Concert,” sang the national anthem alongside Eric Church at Super Bowl LV, and more.
