My Hero: Maa

It's only my sheer fortune that I will be sharing my story at an event hosting such giants. I immensely admire and have been following Nexus Power and Vikalp sir for so long.

Two lives clinging to one. With luggage in one hand, me on the other and my unborn brother inside her, my mother stood at the station for going home. This is just one of the many incidents she had to face alone. She, my hero, taught me endurance. She walked with the universe on her shoulders and made it look like a pair of wings!

Being a single mom, she was the only one there- when I missed my school bus or when my brother took the vaccines. Telling bits & pieces will dilute the subject. So, I will share only three stories.

First- I got a pencil nib in my left ear and had to wait for 3 days for an ENT appointment. She took leave & stayed with me the whole time. Here she taught me to endure pain, in crises of health.

Second was when I burst my quota of crackers in Diwali but still unsatiated, demanded for more. She said NO, obvious as the budget ran out for the month. I kept on wailing and didn't eat. That night Maa cried silently. When I said sorry, she taught me to endure financially, that bad times are transient.

Third, when we had to wait for a whole day in a hospital to see a psychiatrist for my OCD. She told me we must endure with patience. But at last she did bribe a staff to get me in, teaching me how to bribe, haha!

Last year she succumbed to COVID-19. "Why did you come here, couldn't you wait till I returned home" were her last words to me in ICU. But I endured the loss, I have learned well maa. There are nearly 45 million single moms in India, maa was just one of them. So before it's too late, go give a tight hug to your mother, say her aloud that you are grateful. And I salute the selfless lifelong act of motherhood!
