Migrant Workers From Odisha Staring At Uncertain Future

#MigrantWorkers #Ganjam #Odisha

Coronavirus pandemic has destroyed livelihoods. It has snatched jobs and migrant workers have been the worst affected. With employment opportunities virtually non-existent, they don’t have the financial resources to sustain their families.

Here is the story of a migrant worker from Jagdalpur Village of Ganjam district. Brundavan Patra was working in a private company in Surat before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country. He used to send some money to his home every month from Surat. The middle-aged Brundavan Patra is the sole bread-earner of his family that includes two kids, his wife and his old father. He returned from Surat after the lockdown. However, he felt sick after his return and with no income; he was forced to send his small kids to Surat to find work.

It has been over 7 months since the lockdown was declared in the country. I fell sick after that. I am unable to go to Surat now. My kids are not working, but my younger son went to Surat just 15 days ago.

My daughter is sending me money and I am managing to repay the loans. We don’t have any land to cultivate. My sons used to work, but they are jobless after the lockdown.

It’s not only the migrant workers who are suffering. Hundreds of small-scale businesses which employed these migrant workers are on the verge of closing up. To bring some relief, government operated Powerloom Express trains recently to take the returned migrant workers back to Surat. These are pictures of how labourers from Odisha are being welcomed with flowers at Surat Railway station.

We planned to get the workers from Odisha to Surat. We booked a train for them and assisted them completely. Some of them didn’t even have cash to come to Surat.

During the COVID-19 Lockdown, lakhs of migrant workers had returned to Odisha. They hoped to get employment in Odisha. The State Government had promised many schemes and given assurances to provide job to these workers. But the reality is quite different and these workers are once again heading back to Surat despite the threat of COVID19 still looming.
