Haryana Elections: Shadow Of 2016 Jat Quota Agitation Looms Large In Rohtak

In February 2016, widespread arson and violence took place in various parts of Haryana during the Jat reservation agitation. Properties worth over Rs 1,000 crore were destroyed in Rohtak city alone. In Rohtak several automobile showrooms and other shops and business establishments of non-Jats were damaged and torched. Several hundred vehicles were also burnt.
Consequently, former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s son and former MP Deepender Hooda lost his Lok Sabha election from Rohtak to BJP’s Arvind Kumar Sharma earlier this now. Now in the Assembly elections too, there is an unease over the issue.
While both BJP and Congress are hesitant to speak about the incident openly, as they fear antagonising either the Jats or the non-Jats, people who suffered losses during those 10 days of madness may not forget the episode so soon. The Wire spoke to a number of people about how they view the episode and the kind of impact it may have on these Assembly elections.
