Can D. Raja Help the Indian Left Unite and Stir Indian Politics?

Raja is the first Dalit to lead the party in its 94-year-old history. Another big move the CPI has made is inducting youth icon Kanhaiya Kumar to its national executive. These appointments come at a time when the CPI managed to win only 2 seats in the Lok Sabha elections this year.

Those who argue for communist unity say that the merger of the CPI and CPI(M) around a programme of defending the rights of the people in the face of government policies would certainly create an impact greater than what the two parties are able to accomplish individually. And if the Communists are able to forge a closer alliance with the wider arc of social and political movements – especially those involving the Dalit-Bahujan and adivasi masses – this could become the springboard for major changes at the national level.
