Following an argument between two cigar makers, Carmen, a beautiful and charming gypsy, is arrested by the Spanish brigadier Don José. Enchanted, fascinated and seduced by her, he lets her escape. For the love of the woman he breaks with his past by becoming a smuggler. Very soon José becomes an oppressive and possessive lover, pathologically jealous, while Carmen gets fed up with his behavior, aspires to freedom, finding herself a new lover, a bullfighter. Don José dreams of a new life and wants to leave for America with Carmen, but she refuses. His jealousy and her madness prevail over the feeling and passion he feels for her and in the end Don José kills Carmen, a woman who for him, and for the idea of ​​the period, was too free and modern, as well as adulterous.
