Getting your drivers license can be a fun and exciting experience Being able to drive opens a whole world of possibilities and new beginnings. To successfully earn your license in the United Kingdom youll need to apply for a provisional license pass a theory test and pass your driving exam. Once you do you can hit the road and see the world Meet the basic age and vision requirements. To apply for a provisional driving license you must be at least 15 years and 9 months old and be able to read a number plate from 20 metres 66 ft away. Try testing your vision at home with the number plate on a friends or family members vehicle.

Apply for your provisional license online. You can apply for your provisional license online by visiting double you double you double you dot motoring dot direct dot gov dot uk forward slashforward slash DvoConsumer dot portal? nfpb=trueandamp. pageLabel=FAPandamp. nfls=false dot Once on the application website youll need your Government Gateway ID an identity document unless you have a valid UK biometric passport a list of the addresses where youve lived for the last 3 years and your National Insurance number if you know it. With all of this information youll be able to fill out your application.
Apply by post as an alternative to the online application. You can also apply by post by filling out form D1 available at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or certain branches of the post office.
Wait for your provisional license to arrive before driving. If you apply online you should receive a confirmation email after you submit your application and your license should arrive within 1 week. If you applied via post your license could take up to 3 weeks to arrive. Do not drive before youve received your license.Only residents can apply for a UK driving licence, so foreign nationals are reauired to prove they have been living in the country 185 days within the past 12 months
