W. Somerset Maugham's novel is the basis for this melodrama about a young medical student who loves a heartless, unfeeling waitress. Bette Davis received an Oscar nomination for her role as the coldhearted Mildred Rogers, and Leslie Howard earned accolades as the hapless, vulnerable Philip. John Cromwell (The Prisoner of Zenda) directs a top tier cast including Reginald Sheffield, Reginald Owen, Reginald Denny, and Kay Johnson. Upon release, the NY Times praised the film's "authenticity," and Life Magazine called Bette Davis' performance the greatest ever recorded on screen by an actress.
