Don't confuse the "air flow meter" with its newer counterpart, the "air mass sensor." The air flow meter is a half mechanical (internal swinging door) and part electronic (printed resistor circuit board and potentiometer finger) while the air flow sensor is all electronic device. Both monitor intake air as the throttle plate is moved upon acceleration so that the computer can actuate the injectors either allowing less or more fuel into the engine accordingly. Leaning this device is a mechanical operation which involves tightening the clocklike internal spring that tensions the mechanical door which moves when the throttle plate in moved to accelerate. Tightening the spring leans the engine (less fuel) and loosening the spring enriches the engine (more fuel).
