Meanwhile, Canada has become the latest country to halt flights from the UK following the discovery of a new variant of Covid-19, which officials say spread faster than others.
British officials say, the new variant, which prompted the UK government to impose a Tier 4 lockdown in London and southeastern England and tighten restrictions for all of England over the festive period, is "out of control."
Good news is the existing vaccines will most likely still work for the new variant.
Choi Wonjong reports.
The new COVID-19 variant discovered in the UK is believed to be up to 70 percent more transmissible than the original.
This has prompted a new lockdown in London and southeastern England... and warnings to the public.
"The new variant is out of control and we need to bring it under control, and this news about the new variant has been an incredibly difficult end to frankly an awful year. And it's important for everybody to act, essentially act like they might have the virus."
Starting with Britain's neighbors in Europe, the list of countries closing their borders to people coming from the UK is growing by the hour.
In the United States, the government is monitoring the new strain closely.
The head of the U.S. vaccine program, Dr. Moncef Slaoui said Sunday on CNN that the UK mutation is very unlikely to be resistant to current vaccines.
This, he said, is because the vaccines use antibodies against many different parts of the spike protein, and the chances that all of them would change are very low.
The U.S. has already started distributing the vaccine made by Pfizer, and is getting ready to start rolling out the one from Moderna.
The Moderna vaccine will be delivered to more than 37-hundred locations... starting Monday local time.
The U.S. government plans to deliver 5-point-9 million Moderna shots and 2 million Pfizer shots this week.
